Japanese bombers attacked the Chittagong coast in eastern India for a second day as British and Indian troops withdrew to mountains near the frontier. A war bulletin said no land contact occurred, while refugees may have suffered. Chittagong is a Karnaphuli river port near the Bay of Bengal.
Allied reports say Japanese bombers attacked the Indian coast while Japanese ships retreated after suffering 11 ships sunk in the Coral Sea engagement. Allied losses were described as light, with Tokyo’s claims labeled propaganda amid ongoing naval battles.

Ottawa May 5 Canada prepares for two full dress debates on conscription for overseas service in the house of commons next week. Prime Minister Mackenzie King announced a bill to amend the National Resources Mobilization Act will appear on the order paper Monday. The measure would amend section three granting wartime power over Canadians ships and property while barring conscription outside Canada.
Moscow dispatch reports a large group of German soldiers deserting across Soviet lines with few fatalities. The communique cites over 1,350 Germans killed or wounded in scattered eastern front fighting, while supplement noting guerrillas near Leningrad struck a German garrison, destroying fuel and ammunition dumps.

Moscow reports a motor highway across Lake Ladoga saved besieged Leningrad from mass starvation last winter. The line, once thought to be rail based, provided essential reserve stocks for future and will enable lake shipping as ice melts. German losses on the Leningrad front in March and April exceeded 60,000 killed or wounded.
British bomber force hit the German aircraft works at Warnemunde in the Baltic near Rostock in heavy night raids. Report says 19 planes lost amid intense German defense as RAF aims to cripple Luftwaffe bases and production to pave the way for invasion.
