The United States navy department announced that eight Japanese ships, including seven warships, were sunk in a naval engagement near the Solomon Islands in the Pacific and four more enemy vessels were badly damaged.
United Nations headquarters reported increased Japanese naval activity around New Britain and warships near Bougainville in the Solomon Islands. Allied bombers attacked the vessels yesterday with unspecified results, amid continuing danger in the invasion-threatened region.

A London military commentator said British defense forces in Burma remain in the Chimdwin valley northwest of Mandalay. It is unclear if they are under active Japanese attack. Civilians and wounded soldiers are being evacuated by plane, but this does not imply that British forces are attempting to escape an encirclement.
London May 7 government rejects proposals to release thousands of miners from the army to avert fuel rationing. Hugh Dalton says freeing enough men to save 10 million tons of coal would blot out battalions of fine regiments and leave striking force undermanned on the eve of major campaigns. He notes the need for all fighting men to shorten the war and achieve victory.
Ottawa May 7. Navy Minister Macdonald announced in the house that a women’s branch of the Royal Canadian Navy, several thousand strong, will be organized soon as part of this year’s manpower plan. He projected 13 000 new officers and men, 100 ships, and a 44 000 navy personnel by March 23, 1943. The talk covered convoy work, 000,000 tons escorted, 9000 vessels convoyed, and 400 sailors killed.
