Ottawa reports Canadians cashed cheques totaling 90.7 billion dollars in 1948, an all time record ending a decade of steady rises. The bureau notes the uninterrupted annual increase since 1938 when totals reached about 30.9 billion, highlighting both duration and magnitude.
The Shanghai garrison reported strong Communist assaults rolling up on the southwest and northwest fronts. The southwest attack was said held, the northwest beaten back, while Reds pushed deeper into central and southeast China. Simultaneous strikes hit Taichang and nearby areas as thousands pressed from Hangchow toward Shanghai. The drive threatened Nanchang and Hankow’s southeast flank, with reports of 200 dead or wounded after two hours of fighting. The dispatches also noted aerial sightings of two missing persons near a crashed plane southwest of Princeton, B C, as rescue parties mobilized.
Washington May 6 The Russians are expected to push a proposal at the Big Four foreign ministers conference in Paris to withdraw all occupation troops from Germany. Britain the United States and France have not committed to any decision if the Russians present the demand. State Department experts are studying the issue amid other expected Paris discussions.
Berlin based Abend reports from Soviet government circles that Foreign Minister Vishinsky is prepared to concede three points. A federal republic without a fixed timetable, Soviet support for a unified German currency under any condition to revive the eastern zone, and full Russian withdrawal from eastern Germany even if the Paris Big Four talks fail.
President Truman summarized the general state of Anglo American French positions at a press conference. He welcomed the four powers’ new agreement to end the Berlin blockade and said he is happy they can now proceed with negotiations.
The Left Hand Corner reports that Mark C Senn member of parliament for Haldimand will not seek re election when a Dominion general vote is called due to ill health. Senn held the Haldimand seat since 1921 and was seen as a capable, practical representative. His retirement affects Progressive Conservative ranks as the riding’s political history recalls early contests between Montague and Colter.
Hong Kong May 7 Reuters report says two British police inspectors and a Chinese detective were shot dead by pirates while asleep in a police launch anchored in Mus Bay 25 miles northeast of here. The wounded coxswain was forced to steer the boat to Chinese territory and the vessel was stripped of its armament. The killings may reflect a developing wave of unrest as Communists sweep south and attitudes toward Britain harden.
New York May 6 Thomas Mann, the 74 year old German born novelist living in exile in the United States, was named the 1949 Award of Merit recipient by the American Academy of Arts and Letters. The prize includes a $1,000 cash award and is given to a novelist once every five years. Mann won the Nobel Prize in 1929.
Four miners William Kelly Joseph Wowake Raymond Eye and Willam O'Brien were found dead in Gilberton Coal Company No colliery shaft on the second level six hundred feet below the surface after a 48 hour rescue effort to suppress fire smoke at the anthracite mine. Rescue leader Joseph Kapulis reports signs the men collapsed while walking up a shaft tunnel from the 800 foot level.
Berlin reports a Russian blockade inside the American sector with gunfire as barriers near lifting. A German guard-fired fusillade failed to stop a speeding car entering the American zone under cover of night. Police in West Berlin raided a secret Socialist Unity party meeting, arresting 20 people and seizing Communist literature. Continued on Page Two.
A May heat wave blasted the eastern United States while Wyoming and Colorado endured wintry weather. Snow drifted 60 miles along Highway 30, stalling nearly 300 vehicles near Roe Springs and Wamsutter. Cheyenne saw rain mixed with snow as temperatures neared freezing. Ontario endured continued heat with Newfoundland and Nova Scotia forecast flurries.
Provincial police rounded up about 180 strike participants in Asbestos Quebec after a nine week long walkout. Officers combed doors and meeting places arresting those charged with assault and resisting arrest. Riot act read, Inspector General Labbe was injured, and several police were hurt. Arrests were made amid claims of brutality toward youths at Ste Aime church parish hall.
Cannadian Johns Manville vice-president George K Foster says radical unions and imported agitators back the strike. He claims the action targets law and social order, citing violence by about 800 agitators. He says most workers wish to return but are intimidated by a small radical minority.
British and Argentine officials conduct a protracted discussion on a new beef contract. Britain seeks Argentine beef to supplement domestic and Commonwealth supplies while Argentina aims to sell 10 Britain. Disagreement centers on price, with Britain offering about 13 cents per pound and Argentina seeking around 25 cents. Freight adds about 15 percent. world price comparisons are limited. Argentina cites drought and higher domestic use as reasons for shortfalls, while Britain cites dollar shortages and sterling usage as obstacles to trade.
Moose Jaw Saskatchewan May 6 The trans Canada highway will most likely follow the southern route after Premier A J Douglas Saskatchewan told the Saskatchewan Motor Club at its annual meeting. He said Alberta’s preference for the Yellowhead Pass is fading and the east-west artery is practically certain to traverse the southern prairies, passing through Regina and Moose Jaw.
Winnipeg May report from CPR agricultural department shows total prairie wheat acreage at 24,115,880, up from 23,045,000 in 1948, with Manitoba up 11 percent, Saskatchewan 3 percent, and Alberta 6 percent. Dry conditions and below normal precipitation prevail, raising need for rain. Grasshopper threat looms over roughly 2.0 million acres in Manitoba, 40.0 million in Saskatchewan, and 5.0 million in Alberta.
Ottawa reports Prime Minister St Laurent will outline Liberal election issues in a 30 minute CBC broadcast from Ottawa. He speaks 7 30 to 8 pm English and 8 30 to 9 pm French. George Drew has not announced timing for his proclamation.
