Allied forces under General Eisenhower press toward Berlin as German resistance falters. The First and Third Armies push from the south and east, while Ruhr defenses bow under relentless bombardment and rapid maneuvers aiming to seal the German capital.
Soviet and German forces clash across Silesia and Hungary as Red army drives toward Vienna and Danube positions. Reports place Streblen near Breslau and Rybnik near Ratibor with frontline movements into Czecho Slovakia and Moravska Ostrava amid broader Axis resistance.
The American fruit industry marks 1945 jubilees for Elberta peaches and Delicious apples. The Elberta, a leading commercial peach, traces to a Marshallville Georgia seed, while the Delicious owes fame to the Stark nursery in Missouri and Jesse Hiatt of Iowa. London dispatch reports Tokyo radio foresees a war lasting twenty years and possibly into the next century. A new group named The Association of the 20 Years War led by former foreign minister Hachiro Anta is pledged to continue hostilities against the Anglo Americans for the next twenty years.
London, March 27. RAF Lancasters bombed submarine pens at Farge northwest of Bremen using 11 ton bombs in heavy attacks. Weather curtailed morning operations. Oil depot near Vegesack targeted. Koenigsborn and Saensen benzol plants near Hamm also hit. Earlier Allied forces destroyed over 100 enemy tanks with dive bombers as air support for Allied armies across the Rhine showed record strength.
Buenos Aires reports that Argentina declared a state of war with the Axis. Presidential Secretary Coronel Gregorio Taub2 announced the cabinet adopted the grave decision after a lengthy cabinet session to address the inter-American conference invitation to rejoin the American family of nations.
Canadian Press dispatch from Ottawa reports that speakers in the commons view the Dumbarton Oaks draft as a minimum basis for a world security organization. They hope the San Francisco conference will improve on it, with Prime Minister Mackenzie King to respond to differing opinions in a continuation on page three.
General Eisenhower declared the main German western front has been broken and the Germans are a whipped army. He warned of possible new fronts and maintained unconditional surrender would be imposed when West and Russian forces link. He noted tough fighting ahead, especially in the north, and cited 239,090 western prisoners taken since March 1.
In Ottawa on March 27 Hon. R. B Hanson said the current government has no mandate to pursue peace proposals and urged a general election to secure a people’s mandate. He criticized prolonged security debates and noted war appropriations, while urging concerted action beyond the Dumbarton Oaks framework to secure peace.
Mr Hanson argues for a real international army and enforcement power, criticizing League of Nations failure and warning against renewed isolation. He says Canada earned a permanent seat on the security council but was denied, while bigger middle powers seek leadership at San Francisco. He cites Dominican Republic responsibility and Canada’s need to place armed forces at the council’s disposal.
A sizable force of Marianas based B-29s attacked Kyushu shortly before noon, hitting airfields and bases to the coast. Targets included a large aircraft plant near Oma on Kyushu's west side between Sasebo and Nagasaki, marking the first such Marianas strike against a Japanese island other than Honshu. American landings were reported on Cebu in the central Philippines, though verification was pending.
Edmonton March 27 Alberta Attorney General Maynard announced a letter from Finance Minister Ashley showing federal readiness to partner with approved lending companies to fund housing loans in Alberta under the National Housing Act. The legislature passed measures to facilitate such lending, while noting no firm company commitment yet. The issue hinges on mortgage companies entering the province and aligning with Alberta law.
New York March 27 Allied fighter pilots report U S 3rd Army tanks menacing Nurnberg about 108 miles beyond a blackout point. They say spearhead nears Würzburg while Eisenhower claims massive German defeat and rapid advances by Ist and 3rd Armies toward Berlin.
Canadian forces, with the British 2nd Army east of the Rhine, push through Ruhr bridgehead as German resistance weakens. Reports say the 2nd Army advances almost unopposed north along the Ruhr front while Germans may pull parachute troops from the east flank. Canadians further advance northwest of Rees toward Emmerich along the Rhine bank as the bridgehead perimeter softens.
Western Front reports from The Canadian Press describe British Canadian and American troops penetrating the North German plain, outflanking the Rehr Valley and Essen. U.S. 1st Army tanks advance 43 miles east of the Rhine toward Lumberg, with Third Army forces breaking through toward Nuernberg and Frankfurt. The U.S. 11th Army reportedly crossed the Rhine near Karlsruhe without artillery or air support.
March 23 dispatch says U S third Army troops crossed the Main after capturing a damaged bridge and infantry rush into Frankfurt on the rain soaked approach. Also reported: Walter Astles and James Peterson face theft charges in city police court with Astles sentenced to two years and Peterson given a suspended year. Canadian torpedoed vessel sighted near land with most crew saved except six. Opposition members failed to demonstrate in Toronto. U S Navy cuts new shipbuilding plan to 12 escort carriers following a prior March 6 announcement.
