Alaska House Seeks Settlements Along Highway Corridor

Juneau report says the territorial legislature passed a resolution, against Governor Gruening, urging Congress to authorize prospect settlements and development in an 8,000,000 acre strip on each side of the Alaska highway and to run the 48,000,000 acres reserved for military use on the Alaska peninsula and northern Alaska.

Ruhr Valley Cities Raided In Major Allied Air Raid

A large force of RALF bombers attacked Duisburg and other Ruhr targets last night according to the air ministry. Halifax and Wellington squadrons from the Canadian group took part, with two Canadian bombers among four missing. Fighter command patrols reported two aircrafts did not return. The Berlin radio said high explosive bombs caused casualties in western Germany. Duisburg, a major railway hub and inland port, hosts a power station, blast furnace, coke ovens, and a Rhine railway bridge. The raid marks one of the Ruhr’s largest targets with the city about 300 miles from England. Continued on Pare Three.

A ten member British American diplomatic conference was set for the White House with Prime Minister Eden as guest after a luncheon with President Roosevelt. Edmonton March 27 Alberta legislature after long debate passed committee stage of a school act amendment raising minimum teacher salaries from 840 to 800 annually. Opponents urged a cost of living bonus rather than a blanket rise. farmers favored priority. The bill's progress comes amid other measures affecting Calgary and Edmonton city charters and school holidays.

Training Ski Troops In Middle East

A U N observer reports United Nations soldiers in the Middle East are being trained to form ski troop units. Maj. W. J. Riddel, an Olympic sider, supervises the training at a school 7,000 feet up in the mountains. The exact zone of the school is not disclosed. There are several mountain locations in southern Europe where ski troopers could be deployed.

LaGuardia Likely to Join Army Says White House

White House press secretary Stephen Early said all indications point to service in the army for Mayor Fiorello La Guardia of New York City. He could not confirm branch or duties and noted fate of his role would be decided by the secretary of war. La Guardia also co heads the Canadian American joint defence board.

Americans In Surprise Attack Central Tunisia

Allied reports say British 8th Army achieved satisfactory Mareth-line results with local gains. American forces in central Tunisia launched a surprise drive toward Fondouk near Kairouan, while U.S. sectors Maknassy and El Guetar saw no major attacks. Auxiliary Aircraft Carriers In Use In War Effort

The U S Navy disclosed that the last of a deck of auxiliary aircraft carriers are in combat areas with many more in shipyards on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. They help smash the German U boat threat in the Atlantic and provide convoy protection, ferry craft, and fleet support. The greatest need is in the north Atlantic where most of the force will be deployed, per Secretary Frank Knox at a press conference. Converted from Merchant vessels or built as auxiliaries, these carriers carry enough aircraft to patrol beaches and escort ships, seen as a top menace to enemy undersea, surface and air raiders.

Form Alberta Feed Group Formed in Edmonton

Initial steps to form an Alberta feed manufacturers association were taken at a meeting in Edmonton and district. A provisional board was named to advance the proposal with plans to join a Canadian federation discussed at a Winnipeg conference last month. Board members include G. M. Ottawa reports the Prices Board bans merchants from conditioning sales on a minimum one dollar purchase for scarce goods. The board says it withdrew permission due to abuse and will not approve conditional sales of any kind.
