Forces stormed a smoke shrouded riverfront in the last stage of amphibious assault with Navy support. The image shows troops landing under heavy fire with smoke and water splashing as craft reach the riverbank.
Third Army tanks entered southwestern suburbs of Frankfurt and pushed across the Main into the plains of central Germany. First Army opened a sensational 22 mile advance through German lines while armored units moved northeast of Coblenz toward a highway. The campaign coincided with other tank drives in the First Army sector as Patton’s forces neared major German targets. Frankfurt radio went dead overnight.
Allied forces break from the Rhine bridgehead near Hiremagen and push 22 miles east as German efforts to destroy the Aschaffenburg bridge fail. Eisenhower visits the Rhine front as the 1st Army advances, with rapid gains across the upper Rhine and fighting near Karlsruhe and Duisburg.
Former prime minister Earl Lloyd George of Dwyfor died tonight at his 400 year old family farm, aged 82. He was made an earl on New Year’s Day by the King. his wife was at his bedside when the death occurred after an illness in January.
