Allied air power blasted nine large German army camps and five air fields in the Ruhr as about 7,000 planes joined by 14 waves of heavy bombers and escorted by fighters conducted wide range operations from the North Sea to Austria. General Eisenhower warned this merciless offensive was coming.
Allied forces push across the Palatinate and Saarland as U S Third Army seizes Ludwigshafen and Mainz fights into its third day. First Army reaches the Sieg river near the Ruhr while the Seventh Army advances north of the main line. Expanded bridgehead toward Coblenz shortens the gap to the Rhine.
The Commons will debate government plans for Canadian participation in the San Francisco World Security Conference and the Senate will sit. PC House Leader Gordon Grardon backs participation while Church and Pouliot call the conference premature. Wilfrid Lacroix would vote against involvement. Prime Minister King rules out John Bracken attending. Senator Vaillancourt urges reducing extremist publicity.

London broadcast reports nearly 3,000,000 Japanese evacuated from Tokyo with civilian population under 4,000,000 in war census. Tokyo’s 1940 population listed as 6,778,304. In Washington, Superforts bomb Rangoon’s key military sites for the second time in under two weeks.
SFOCKHOLM March 22 AP reports a train from Bydgoszcz bearing fleeing Nazi leaders faced threats from Berliners. Local authorities, citing safety concerns, opened fire when the crowd grew tense and conditions escalated.
Ottawa March 22 Howard Green urged in the commons that peace hinges on a world organization and Canada must be ready to furnish fighting men anywhere peace is threatened. He warned that isolationist attitudes endanger a real peace structure and pressed for a permanent British Commonwealth seat over the United Kingdom.
German radio said American forces on the western front are using the General Pershing tank with 90 mm caliber. Allied correspondents have not been allowed to state in dispatches whether the tank has actually seen action.
Toronto March 22. German prisoners of war escaped from Spruce Falls Pulp and Paper Co camp at Kapuskasing Ontario Tuesday and Wednesday. They had been refused to work and were detained for internment at Hearst. Names include Seeling Hilderbrandt Harbertz Martin Hubert Pause plus others. police seek aid from Ontario police and Veterans Guards.
Buenos Aires March 22 The government weighed declaring war on Japan to qualify for the United Nations and end diplomatic isolation. Informed quarters believed a decision would be made before the weekend on declaring war.
DEWITT MACKENZIE reports Allied advance in Saarland and Palatinate signals possible Rhine crossing by Montgomery's army. German hold west of the Rhine reduced to a bridgehead, paving the way for Ruhr invasion. Civilians flee as German war machine falters. losses exceed 100,000 in the Saar-Palatinate offensive.

London reports Swiss papers claim Hitler completed plans for a last stand in Berchtesgaden Bavarian fortress as allies close in. They say he expects a twilight postwar period when a Nazi revival could emerge after Allied victory and chaos following a Western offensive.
Field Marshal Albert von Kesselring has been appointed commander in chief of the German armies in the west replacing his Italy command. The announcement states he will head the western front from current headquarters as of tonight.
Ottawa March 22 approval by the Progressive Conservative party of Canada's participation in the San Francisco World Security conference. MPs voiced opposition noting the conference premature and expressing concern over broader security and disarmament issues. Greydon led a critical charge while others urged caution and parliamentary scrutiny.
