Tunnel dream revived as ferry funds wasted
Ottawa March 26 The 50 year plan to link Prince Edward Island to the mainland via a tunnel was urged in the house of commons by Dr T W Grant Liberal Kings who argued that money spent on car ferries and ice breakers over 50 years could have paid for the tunnel. He estimated a 20 million dollar cost and said no lasting result from ferries. Prime Minister King reaffirmed Canada’s 1938 foreign policy of peace and friendliness and unity with the United Nations to win the war and shape postwar peace. The remark followed an article in the Washington press raised by Gordon Graydon about Canada's status.

Escape of 20 Irish internees from Londonderry jail

Alberta school bill would extend holidays to farm harvest period
EDMONTON March 20 Premier Aberhart introduced a bill in the Alberta legislature to start school vacations Aug 1 and run to October to provide harvest help. After this year schools stay open in July and holidays shift. Easter holidays are eliminated except Easter Monday 1944. The bill also changes pay to 22 monthly instalments, curtails certain local holidays, and sets a March 1 to Feb 1 school year divided into two terms ending Aug 31 and Feb 28. It aims to free 20,000 to 25,000 high school boys for farm and seasonal work during wartime. The bill was given first reading.
