Belgrade reports say Yugoslavia’s resistance has stiffened under US anti Axis aid pledges and rumors of a British expeditionary force moving into Greece. Diplomats say the shift strengthens Yugoslav resolve as Allied support grows.
Berlin reports an undetermined fire aboard the German liner Bremen with no official word on sinking. Bristol endures another night of heavy air raids with high explosives and incendiaries causing fatalities and damage, while rescue efforts continue and authorities note the dangers of a public shelter hit.
British imperial troops backed by warships and planes recaptured Berbera, seaport capital of British Somaliland, after seven months of Italian occupation. About 100 prisoners were taken with minimal British casualties reported. The operation aided a broader push to crush Italy's East Africa holdings, including advances toward Cheren and the Eritrean railway, as Ethiopian and Eritrean fronts open.

MARQUETTE Mich March 17 United States coast guards search continues for other fishermen after seven men and a woman spent 23 hours on a broken ice floe in sub zero gales reaching the Lake Superior shore. Ambulances ferried eight survivors from L Anse to hospitals as winds whipped to 50 miles per hour with more than 20 still unaccounted for. One rescued man named John Osterman Jr among the eight with others unnamed. Five drifted ashore on a small floe last night.
OTTAWA March 17. An application for entry into the Dominion has been received from Dr Otto Strasser once allied with Adolf Hitler and now a refugee. Official sources would not comment on the subject. Strasser’s current whereabouts and the official view on his application were not disclosed.
Regina March 17 The Saskatchewan legislature budget debate is expected to begin tomorrow with Premier Patterson delivering the budget speech.
Senator Carter Glass of Virginia backs convoying war materials to Britain and any action to defeat Hitler. He supports Roosevelt's ship references and says he favors vigorous measures. Senator Gerald Nye seeks to halve the 87 billion dollar British aid appropriation, a plan Glass opposes.
President Roosevelt told White House reporters that the nation must commit to a total victory over the dictators. He warned of sacrifices ahead, including higher living costs and longer work hours, and urged abandoning normalcy and war profiteering while supporting the lease lend bill to deny appeasement.
Informing sources say Fritz Thyssen the German industrialist who aided Hitler’s rise and then fell from grace has been surrendered by Vichy to Germany and is believed held at Dachau concentration camp under the French German armistice terms. He had lived in Cannes before his December arrest by French police.
