GM Strike Ends With Wage Increase and Equity Promises

Detroit March 13 The GM strike ends with an 18 percent hourly wage rise and a 16 percent base, plus agreed removal of wage inequities. The settlement includes improved vacation pay overtime rates for seven day operation and equal pay for women, boosting average increases well beyond 1944 cents. Signed by GM, mediator James F. Dewey, and the United Auto Workers, the deal ends the 118th day of the walkout affecting 175,000 workers.

P O W Murder Trial Resumed in Medicine Hat Camp

In Medicine Hat Alberta on March 13 the Pte Adolf Kratz 24 one of three German prisoners of war charged with murdering fellow prisoner August Plaszek 42 at the internment camp July 22 1943 testified after a two day adjournment. A witness described a hanging in the recreation hall with an improvised scaffold as guards observed.

Edmonton March 13 Q If the two C C F members of the Alberta legislature moved a resolution declaring that fresh air and sunshine were good for the human race and that everybody should have enough of both it would probably be opposed by the Social Credit party on the ground that it was a socialistic idea emanating from international finance or else I would be ruled out of order E Roper said last night In addressing the Edmonton C C F association Mr Roper provincial leader of the party and who represents Edmonton in the house contended any motions introduced into the legislature by C C F members were marked for defeat just because of their sponsorship He told of efforts he and his colleague A J Liesemer C C F Calgary had made to introduce new motions and to implement resolutions passed at previous sessions

Suspend Jap Deportation Amid Privy Council Appeal

Ottawa March 13 Prime Minister Mackenzie King announced orders in council deportations of some Japanese in Canada will be suspended pending the Privy Council appeal outcome after a Supreme Court ruling. The government will assist appeals while the Justice Department eases early departures for Japanese who wish to leave. Free transport and minimal financial credits are provided under order in council PO 7355 for those leaving with their families and baggage as allowed by shipping conditions.

Cpl Harvey Acquitted By Court Martial In Manslaughter Case

Winnipeg dispatch reports Cpl John Hugh Harvey of the British army was acquitted by a court martial on a manslaughter charge related to the death of Pte John J. Friesen of the Winnipeg Grenadiers in a Japanese prison camp circa February 1944. The all-British panel, presided by Maj Gen J W N Haugh, deliberated under 16 minutes.
