British Minister to Bulgaria and his staff escaped a deadly blast when a hidden bomb partially destroyed a Turkish hotel they were staying in. The group had just arrived in Istanbul after severing ties with Bulgaria.
Ottawa announces continuation of 70 cents per bushel wheat payment for 1941 42 with a 230 million bushel limit for deliveries to the Canadian Wheat Board. Quota system remains based on 65 per cent of the 1940 41 acreage and bonuses for summer fallow and reduced sowing.
New York March 12 German calls for facilities to fly military planes across Spain to Africa were rejected by General Francisco Franco. Informants say a swift diplomatic maneuver by Nazi Foreign Minister Ribbentrop collapsed and Spanish Ambassador Espinosa De Los Monteros to Berlin lost his post.
Sergeant Hose of the Home Guard in England salutes a superior officer. Former Canadian Navy chief of naval staff from 1920 to 1933, Rear Admiral Walter Hose, retired in 1933 and settled near Southampton. Now in wartime service, he has risen to sergeant, with three jobs and little sleep. His letter home notes three undisturbed nights since enlistment as war continues. The story continues on page 13.
Four killed and about twenty injured when a bomb exploded in the lobby of the Pera Plaza hotel in Istanbul as British minister George W. Rendel and his party arrived from Sofia by tram. British quarters say the plot aimed to end Turkish British relations and was likely engineered in Bulgaria. The luggage mixup at Sofia station linked two suitcases to the attack, with one taken to the hotel. Rendel escaped unharmed.
Cairo reports Britain’s forces in the Middle East advance in East Africa and strike Italy in the Mediterranean. A Mediterranean fleet submarine sunk a Sicilia class 9,646-ton troop transport. details were not disclosed. RAF heavy bombers hit Tripoli, destroying harbor buildings and shipping, with fires on the jetty and airfields bombed. No British planes were lost.
The Asahi reports France Indochina and Thailand assured Japan they will not join any third power against Japanese interests. The assurances followed Tokyo seeking them after a Japanese negotiated treaty ended the border dispute between Thailand and Indochina.
In Carrollton Missouri on March 12 a Wabash train halted at the depot bringing about two dozen stray dogs into town. Roy Mack, a car chef, began feeding bones for the hungry canines and now faces a steady stream of barking customers at each stop.

Government proposals include demobilization, Axis control of economy and transport, allowing war material transit, and troop passage through Yugoslavia.
Ottawa March 12 Labor Minister McLarty announced Tom Moore president of the Trades and Labor Congress of Canada was asked to chair the national employment committee to advise the unemployment insurance commission. The panel will include equal numbers from labor and industry and the plan is near operating with broad labor policy decisions already adopted after council consultation.
In Sedalia Missouri on March 12 Miss Ruby Hudson champion pie baker from a 1939 Chicago contest was cited. Elwood Miller of Hazelton Pennsylvania saw her picture and wrote her. This week the parents of Miss Hudson announced her engagement to Miller.
London a government report says three high explosive bombs struck Buckingham Palace grounds killing a policeman and damaging a wall. Incendiaries hit across the road and three more explosives nearby. A rescue tale of a blue Persian cat from a ruined lodge suggests the blasts were part of London’s heaviest attack staged last Saturday night.
Edmonton March 12 C P Reynolds S C Stettler rose for his maiden speech in the present session to criticize the Alberta government from the government side of the house. He led off the budget debate, urging higher spending.
The Dominions Office disclosed that British forces dispatched Australian and New Zealand troops from England for service in the Middle East. The destination and timing were kept secret, with authorities citing security and strategy concerns.
