Ether inhalation came through a tea strainer, the incision used a broken scalpel, alcohol from torpedoes as antiseptic, and improvised tools from spoons to rubber gloves. After two and a half hours the appendix was removed. ether ran out just as the last stitch was placed. Rector, back on duty thirteen days later, kept bent spoons as souvenirs.
