Two Cruisers Among Lost

LONDON March 3. The admiralty announced that the cruisers Spartan and Penelope and the destroyers Jann and Inglefield plus five major assault vessels are the price the Royal Navy has paid for the 5th Army beach head south of Rome. Penelope loss confirmed with prior notices for other vessels. Shipping losses in Allied convoys ran under one in 1,000 in late 1943 as the navy estimates were introduced in the commons.

Fiji Islanders Kill Off Japs on Bougainville Island

A Pacific theater report cites Lt Gen Harmen saying 125 Japanese killed to one Fijian dead and two wounded. The Fiji battalion, led by Maj Geoffrey T.
