Finance Minister Ilsley says Canada's Sixth Victory Loan opens April 24 with a 1.2 billion objective. Individuals, and special names firms led by life insurers and investment funds, plus payroll and general canvasses split 525 million and 675 million respectively. Borrowing supports continued war effort.
President Roosevelt said discussions on transferring about one third of the surrendered Italian fleet to Russia are about half completed. He added Edward R. Stettinius will go to London to discuss with British officials a dozen questions awaiting solution and noted the Allies are already using some surrendered Italian tonnage.
Allied defense held firm against a major German drive on the Anzio beachhead. Air forces dropped about 40,000 bombs in a record strike while artillery tore into German ranks. Nine German tanks were knocked out and a company of troops ambushed near Littoria. Canadians made prisoner captures and Tito’s forces supported air strikes along the Yugoslav coast.
Edmonton March 3 A resolution urging that Alberta legislature members who joined overseas service should receive acclamation in a provincial general election before the next session was ruled out of order. The motion by E J Martin and Andrew Davison was dismissed after Attorney General Maynard argued it overlapped his Election Act amendment to automate candidate nomination after dissolution. Capt Thomas Tremblay Lib Grouard currently serves overseas.
Allied announces Momote airfield captured on Los Negros in Admiralty group with reinforcements landed to seal occupation. Cavalry forces repelled Japanese counter attacks, sinking a barge near New Ireland and aiding bombardments of Rabaul and Holandia. Heavier reinforcements bolster the force as airfield work begins.
London correspondent notes near London a country inn containing an improvised desert chapel built by a Wellington bomber wing. Two tents form an ancient Arab arch west front with a wooden cross. Altars and rails from wrecked enemy planes, shells as vases, flare boxes as choir stalls, and bomb box seats. Volunteers dug two feet in sand to raise the roofs and an organ was funded by airmen. London dispatch says new 12,000 pound bombs now rain on German targets with enormous destructiveness. The air ministry notes a factory at Limoges and an Albert, Germany bound raid. Lancaster bombers carried the giant bombs, and crews returned if target was in doubt.
Air Minister Power urges Canada to set a new goal for demobilized soldiers beyond material rewards. He warns against overemphasis on postwar wealth and calls for emphasis on the spiritual task of peacetime Canada as veterans return home.
New Delhi dispatch reports Japanese counter attacks in the Kaladan Valley near Kyauktaw and in Apaukwa as West Africans push southward in the area facing stiff resistance. British forces mop up remnants in Ngakyedauk Pass while Chinese troops trap a small Japanese force near Maingkwan. Allied patrols locate enemy positions in the Chin hills as Prome supply dumps are bombed with large fires noted.
Captain Impey told a Canadian club luncheon that Japanese aggression has intensified since the Manchurian campaign. He cited the assault on a Toronto friend's Singapore home where his 11 year old daughter Dorothy was hurt as troops killed his seven year old daughter. He quoted seeing 800 Chinese girls taken for immoral purposes and later found discarded in snow. He alleged press silence to protect economic ties with Japan.
American fighter planes conducted a daylight sweep over Berlin joining 8th Air Force heavy bombers over northern Germany. It marked the first time U S airmen flew over Berlin, a target previously attacked only by RAF and RBCAF. The move hints at possible future heavy bomber raids on the German capital.
War Services Minister LaFleche faced questions on Elmer Philpott's Vancouver broadcast script and whether censorship was used as MPs pressed for tighter rules. The issue touched Lt Gen McNaughton's leave, with LaFleche noting possible action but not details. Edmonton March 3 reading given in Alberta legislature to a bill making pipelines scrubbing plants and wells for natural gas subject to a two man commission with powers like the Board of Public Utility Commissioners. The act authorizes the board to compel construction or rearrangement of lines and installation of compression gear to conserve and transport gas. The commission includes G M Blackstock as chairman and Dr E H Boomer of the University of Alberta. It also can buy a plant or expropriate it if producers refuse to obey.
Moscow dispatches report the Red Army pushes to liberate Baltic republics despite warm weather melting roads. Russian gains include stronger hold on Narva communications and advances near Pskov and Ostrov while German defense relies on Velikaya and Pskov rivers creating defensive barriers.
Soviet report says Gen Leonid Goverev's Leningrad army expanded its bridgehead over the Narva river into Estonia southwest of Narva while other Red formations took 10 villages and two railway stations near Pskov. The drive on Ostrov south of Pokov also reported with six villages and two railway stations seized.
