The Supreme Court of Canada unanimously upholds the validity of wartime rent regulations and allows a one year extension to March 31 1951. The ruling states Parliament controls emergency measures and can decide duration while eight provinces may implement the extension.
The Board of Transport Commissioners approved a general freight-rate increase of 7.4 percent, layering on top of prior rises and exempting grain and coal sectors. The change, likely in effect from March 20 to 25, could raise rail revenue by about 28.9 million yearly with schedules to be prepared for full implementation.

Josephine Poll was pulled back to safety by Purser Michael Mann as suction pulled at her. The window failed at 20 000 feet over the South Carolina coast with 22 passengers aboard.
Ottawa report of March 1 states the commons voted 148 to 55 against a double-barreled progressive motion aimed at testing confidence in the government and urging Canada to call a Commonwealth trade conference. John Diefenbaker led the motion, supported by the Progressive Conservative, COR, Social Credit parties and two Independents. Finance Minister Abbott rejected the proposal.

The brief Old Bailey trial lasted 99 minutes with one witness, security officer William Skardon, detailing seven years of confessed leaks.
A 20 year old pilot Morris Grant of Whitehorse survived four days marooned on a Yukon mountainside after a Tiger Moth crash near Taku Arm British Columbia. He was flown to hospital in Edmonton with frozen feet and facial injuries after rescue by a para rescue team and aircraft. He said he carried a fire from wreckage and walked nine hours to timberline before enduring four days in the cold before rescue.
Britain’s newly elected parliament opened as Conservatives taunted Labour to “cheer up” with Labour holding a seven vote majority. Prime Minister Attlee announced strong reshuffles to shore up the government against a Conservative push to curb socialization programs and tighter austerity measures. Attlee was reelected Labour leader. Morrison Bevin and Cripps kept top posts as 15 cabinet changes were announced after a two hour caucus.
A six hour blaze at the Ridpath Hotel in downtown Spokane was brought under control by 230 firefighters. More than 250 guests and residents were evacuated from the 4 and 5 story Ridpath complex, while adjoining Halliday Hotel and stores were cleared as flames threatened. Four firefighters were overcome by smoke, with no major injuries reported.
The Metropolitan Opera Association honored Edward Johnson, its general manager since 1935, with an Edward Johnson Night. Johnson will step down May 31 after 15 years in the post, and Rudolf Bing of Vienna will succeed him.
Ken Reardon of Montreal Canadiens has been fined 1000 by the NHL for remarks attributed to him in a magazine piece. The article claimed Reardon threatened to see Cal Gardner of the Toronto Maple Leafs receive 14 stitches, a reprise of an incident in a past game. President Clarence Campbell noted Reardon may petition for a refund of the fine after his playing days.
