In Ottawa the house of commons votes 5 to 46 against a motion by Rev. A M Nicholson to table plans and specifications for Wartime Housing Ltd buildings. Government minister Howe says the plans are government property and should not be copied.
Canadians aided the R A F in a heavy 30 minute attack on the U-Boat base at St Nazaire dropping over 1 000 tons of high explosives and incendiaries. Five aircraft are reported missing including two from the R C A P bomber group as Halifax and Wellington squadrons joined the bombardment.
The Most Rev Arthur Cardinal Hinsley 77 Archbishop of Westminster and Primate of the Roman Catholic Church on Great Britain is gravely ill and has received the last rites. A statement from his residence says he collapsed Saturday night and prayers are asked for his recovery from his own flock.

From New Delhi on March 1 reports say airmen damaged or sunk a 7000 ton Japanese merchant ship off Rangoon and struck Japanese installations at Waingmaw in northern Burma. U S Army air force bulletin notes at least four direct hits on the merchant ship and a heavy fire when last seen. The same bulletin claims fighters shot down eight bombers and six fighters with probable additional losses in a mass raid on Assam air bases. Royal Navy action off Ramree island yielded at least fifty Japanese dead and further engagements near Burma’s coast. Guerrilla activity in Ukawng valley and north of Marikyira was reported as persistent.
The Rome broadcast via Associated Press said about 200 killed and hundreds wounded in raids on Cagliari and Palermo with Sicily suffering further casualties. Axis torpedo planes reportedly sank two Allied freighters totaling 17 000 tons and damaged destroyers in a convoy attack, though unconfirmed.
Rome radio reports Count Galeazzo Ciano, former Italian foreign minister, was received by Pope Pius XII and presented his credentials as the new Italian ambassador to the Vatican. Reuters filed the broadcast.
German forces pressed toward Beja in northern Tunisia advancing three miles beyond Sidi Nsir despite heavy Allied ground and air losses. Allied air support pinned back Axis armor while RAF fighters scored hits on tanks and armored cars.

Original blower damaged by blast and rescue teams work in shifts with gas masks as conditions grow perilous.
A Saturday night blaze in the kitchen of the Inter-Lake hotel in Fisher Branch caused about $30,000 in damage. The fire spread to A. J. Menard’s garage and damaged the post office, a store, and two warehouses in the village 96 miles north of Winniper. Firefighters extinguished the blaze with some property loss reported.
On Monday night the Russians announced a major winter offensive in the Lake Ilmen sector south of Leningrad. They said Marshal Semyon Timoshenko's forces captured Demyansk and 301 other localities and pushed German troops back, claiming 13,000 enemy casualties or captures. About 909 square miles of the northwest front were liberated and two German defense systems crushed.
