In Ottawa two wireless operator air gunners have completed training with the Royal Canadian Air Force. They display the AG badge with a single wing and letters, marking their grim calling. They pose with a Lewis machine gun used in training.
German army drives into Bulgaria's capital Sofia by road and air after Bogdan Philoff signs Vienna treaty. British minister warns of severed ties with Bulgaria as Luftwaffe bombs target communications. Armored cars roll into central Sofia while Junkers planes land at the airfield with troops in battle dress.
John Winant arrives in England to take up the post as United States ambassador. He is greeted by King George VI at a Bristol London platform after a long-distance flight from Lisbon. Accompanying Winant are Benjamin Cohen and Harvard president James Conant.
London reports the British Broadcasting Corporation notes an Italian press admission that Italy may withdraw from Eritrea and Italian Somaliland. In Hartford on March 1 a court granted Alvin Arnold De Ribbentrops and their two children permission to change their family name to Robinson, removing the Ribbentrop lineage from the record.
An earthquake measuring felt at 5:55 am today struck northern Greece, centered near El Assona with extensive damage. Larisa, a 30,000 population town, saw collapsed buildings including a hotel and many uninhabitable structures. Troops aided in rescuing victims as authorities sought tents for about 15,000 homeless residents.
London March 1 CP The food ministry says the three fighting services will reduce soldier sailor and airman rations to aid the national food and shipping situation. Cuts include army and air force meat 14 ounces less for a 42 ounce ration sugar 3 ounces to 14 ounces tea two ounces margarine 10 ounces bacon nine ounces weekly. Navy ration details not disclosed. Helsinki March 1 food rationing tightens with under 50 cents weekly meat or eggs per person. Ottawa March 1 CP munitions and supply dept awards 1,524 contracts valued at 19,019,223 dollars for week ended Feb 21.
A Calgary labor leader is appointed superintendent of unemployment insurance for the prairie provinces, a move that consolidates provincial coverage and signals a shift in regional labor policy. The appointee brings decades of union experience and will oversee claims processing and program oversight across Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta.
Tokyo reports a hitch in last minute peace talks between French Indo China and Thailand as French Ambassador Henry fails to meet. The British government said its forces withdrawn after achieving their objective. The bulletin claimed the Italian force destroyed the British garrison and asserted no seaplane base exists on the island.
Ottawa announces five appointments to the unemployment insurance commission across five provinces. Maj. H. S. Relph becomes chief reviewing officer and Enric Stangroom chief inspector of insurance revenue. Regional superintendents include B. G. Sullivan for Ontario and Fred J. White for Alberta Saskatchewan and Manitoba. J. H. McVety will head British Columbia and Yukon. White has 25 years in printing and prior legislative and local government service. McVety has engineering and union background. Further appointments may follow, says the civil service commission.

Edmonton March 1 Dr P M Campbell Ind Lethbridge urged reform of people not just finance in the Alberta legislature saying relief comes from changing attitudes toward debt. He backed the no borrowing policy but argued governments must shoulder obligations and reduce the debt. He cited Lethbridge’s plan to pay down its indebtedness by 1946 with minimal impact on the province’s population.
The United Church of Canada announces a nationwide campaign during the week of March 2010 to purchase war savings and register a portion in the church’s name. Funds will retire a 1.7 million dollar deficit from missionary years with Rev. Denzil G. Rideout directing the Dominion-wide plan. Conference directors include Rev. T. H. Sendall in Saskatchewan, Rev. A K. McMinn in Alberta, and Rev. G. A. Wilson in British Columbia.
