A burly gunman tied to the May 25 slaying of RCMP Constable Alexander Gamman was captured near Whitetail Montana and brought to Regina Jail for interrogation by Montreal police. The accused, Thomas Rossler 45, gave an oral admission claiming he did not intend to shoot Gamman.

Pretoria dispatch says Marshal Jan Smuts spent a fair night at his farm and was in unchanged condition this morning according to the daily medical bulletin.
Detroit June 18 44 A Quebec investment banker Arthur Lagueux takes over the presidency of Rotary International the 340000 member service organization. Lagueux heads the firm Lagueux and Des Rochers and is an official of several Canadian companies.
Canadian External Affairs Minister Pearson told Stanford graduates that Canada values independence within the Commonwealth and rejects any move toward union with the United States. He asserted Canadians prefer their own social and political system and that trade ties should not erode economic independence.
The Quebec Federation of Labor wrapped up a three day convention in Quebec Sunday with 300 delegates representing 49 000 workers voting to launch a province wide drive to organize non organized workers. They also amended the federation constitution to bar anyone known to be a Communist or Communist sympathizer from holding office.
Park Lake crash kills eight year old Carolyn Jarvie of 445 19th Street North and Stavely resident Eric Hedin 24 in a freak tractor truck accident. Hedin and two companions were en route to Raymond when a GALC dump truck left the gravel highway and rolled into a ditch. Hedin died when the truck’s rear wheels ran over his head. Police noted the coroner viewed the child’s body Sunday evening and the inquest was adjourned.
The Ruhr miners and steel workers rejected Communist policies in a Sunday vote but favored a state constitution calling for socialization of basic industries. They elected a legislature for North Westphalia in the British zone, a state with 9 million registered voters. The Ruhr had been a Communist stronghold, polling 14 percent three years earlier.
Crews probing the Cadomin Coal Co mine for five entombed men cleared the main entry of debris and work on steep secondary shafts. No bodies found by early today and some miners fear it may take weeks to reach them.
