Italian broadcasts report a clash with an east bound British convoy off Africa and Sardinia. Rome says two cruisers and a destroyer were sunk and five other ships damaged including an aircraft carrier and a battleship. London offered no comment.
Japanese broadcasts claim today that a San Francisco class cruiser and a submarine were sunk at the Battle of Midway Island, adding to earlier losses. no independent confirmation. U S Navy lists damage to one destroyer and one aircraft carrier. Japan had earlier claimed two carriers sunk.
During six months more than 4900 British factories were shifted to new wartime work adding 50 million square feet of space for production or storage. Carpets, corsets, boots and shoes, leather goods, glass, textiles and other industries were reorganized. Some plants repurposed to manufacture torpedoes, air engine parts, airplane components, or salvaged equipment to ensure rapid output if required. The Australian story shows Digger and his dog Jack roaming rural areas, reflecting civilian life after service.
A small bomb blast shattered the Paris city hall through an underground passage, causing structural damage but no injuries. The target appeared to be occupying Germans and French collaborators. Two airmen from No. 73 F.T.S. MacLeod were killed Monday morning in a midair collision three and a half miles north and two miles east of Granum. The twin Avro Anson trainers from MacLeod RCATP station were in formation when they collided. Names withheld until next of kin advised. Wing Commander R F Davenport announced a court of inquiry will investigate.
Agriculture Minister Gardiner told Parliament that conscription for overseas service would only be imposed if democratic institutions in Canada were threatened. He supported studies for the National Resources Mobilization Act amendment allowing overseas service at any time, noting a national government might be needed to act immediately. Gardiner cited past leaders Mackenzie King and La Pointe and warned that a Yes vote on manpower plebiscite did not equal approval of overseas conscription.
The Lexington sank after fires and explosions from burning ammunition and fuel. Rear Admiral Frederick C. Sherman described the battle as a decisive victory, noting American torpedo and dive bombing planes crippled two Japanese carriers and damaged another before the Lexington went down.
