Allied forces push from the Normandy beachhead toward Cherbourg with American, British and Canadian units engaging strong German resistance around Caen and Carentan. Isigny and Trevieres captured. over 5,000 prisoners taken. air and ground efforts target railways and communications as Bradley reports progress and awaits counter attacks.
A Finnish communique quoted by DNB said Soviet forces launched a general offensive on the Karelian Isthmus north of Leningrad, aided by heavy artillery and tanks. Attacks were repelled at most points with local breaches, while the Soviets suffered many casualties and lost ten tanks. Reconnaissance continued elsewhere on the fronts.
Up to 500 U S heavy bombers attacked German airfields in Brittany and Normandy and gun positions near the French coast. RAF Mosquitos backed by night blows on Berlin. Raids targeted Flers Rennes Laval Le Mans and a rail junction at Etampes. Coastal aircraft cooperated with naval forces in the campaign ahead of the invasion.

London reports pilots of an R C A F Beaufighter squadron said they sent at least 70 rocket projectiles into a beached German Narvik class destroyer last night after two Canadian tribal class destroyers forced it aground in flames on the Isle de Bas yesterday. The attack left the destroyer afire amidships as Beaufighters also scored hits with bombs.
Allied forces reported a pre-dawn naval clash southwest of Ushant in which four Royal Navy destroyers Canadian Haida and Huron and two Polish destroyers hit two German destroyers and damaged two more from a 2 flotilla. The engagement near Brittany was the most dramatic of three surface actions reported with additional interdiction of E boat attempts and coastal defense contributions by US and British units.
Ottawa reports a busy week in the House of Commons with seven major measures advanced or passed. Highlights include the 3.6 billion war appropriation bill, a railways borrowing provision for 1944, the war service electors bill, and farm credits measures. Finance Minister Isley defended a 5 percent loan rate, and government guarantees were outlined for losses.
Canadian assault infantry engineers and tank crews breached the Normandy coast four miles with a rising tide. They faced heavy Atlantic Wall fortifications, hedgerows, and dozens of obstacles, yet advanced under a costly naval barrage and strong infantry assault.

Finance Minister Ilsley urged banks to bear risk, while critics argued the interest rate was too high and the state should guarantee more. Advanced Allied Headquarters in New Guinea reports American medium bombers sank four Japanese destroyers off Manokwari Dutch New Guinea. A fifth destroyer was damaged while a cruiser and a sixth fled. Ten bombers blocked a Japanese effort to reinforce Biak garrison as ten army fighters countered, shooting down three American planes and destroying five Japanese aircraft. Ground forces at Biak mopped up remaining targets in Mokmer and prepared to attack Borokoe and Sorido airstrips west of Mokmer.
German 14th Army withdraws in disorder as Allied forces press northward. Tuscania and Tarquinia fall to the 5th Army while the 8th Army advances near the Adriatic. Allied air forces destroy hundreds of vehicles and rail cars and down 34 enemy planes amid heavy bombings of Munich area facilities.

Rome reports a new Italian government under premier Ivanne Bonomi with 17 vacant seats. The cabinet combines underground liberation leaders active in Rome during the war and anti-Fascist southern leaders who had joined Marshal Badoglio’s cabinet earlier. Badoglio retired after liberation leaders refused to serve under him.
Allied headquarters said Gen. Sir Bernard Montgomery established his advanced headquarters in France and has visited frontline troops amid progressing operations. French revolt spreads toward Vichy as unrest grows in central France. Benes forecasts a major Soviet offensive soon and end of Nazi domination nears. Chinese forces seize southern Lamgling and push toward Mangshih in Yunnan. Grenoble laid siege as French patriots tighten grip.
