Former Mountie arraigned on spy charges

James Morrison a former RCMP corporal faced espionage charges after a Kingston era reveal. He was released on 50000 bail posted by his son Stewart a teacher and will enter a plea Friday. A publication ban was requested as arguments were heard by Judge Roger Scott in Ottawa. Morrison was arrested in Prince Rupert BC and flown to Ottawa after a week in custody. The case ties to John Sawatsky s book and long held Soviet spy codes. Morrison denied selling out and provided a controversial 1950s RCMP statement he says was false. Proceeding could bring life imprisonment if convicted under the Official Secrets Act.

Thatcher seeks landslide win in British election

London AP report says Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher sought a landslide victory to banish extreme left socialism as turnout pressed 75 to 80 percent in a race that could produce more than 400 Conservative seats. Labor faced disunity over nuclear policy while the centrist alliance sought to disrupt Tory dominance in the 650-seat House of Commons race.

Former Peigan chief and son charged with fraud theft

Nelson Small ce 52 and Deva lon Small 29 of Brocket charged with one count each of fraud and theft related to an irrigation project on the Peigan reserve. They allegedly defrauded Estabrook Construction Ltd Grimshaw and Cariboo Construction Ltd Peace River of 35000 between Oct 11 and Dec 4 1982 and stole funds from the Peigan Band. Charges follow RCMP probe by Commercial Crime Section into canal work and Alberta Environment. Small Legs Sr. was band chief at the time. his son was irrigation project co ordinator.

Mulroney closes gap on Clark in Tory leadership race

City woman to stand trial for arson and murder charges

A 32 year old Lethbridge woman, Susan Rose Bernice Janni, will appear in Court of Queen's Bench for arraignment July 11 on arson and murder charges related to a December fire that killed two of Dirk Scholten’s six children. A preliminary inquiry found sufficient evidence. publication details are banned. Also charged are two counts of arson, one of break-in, and two breach of probation.
