Council Approves Massive Public Works Plan for City in 1948

City council approved an $800000 public works program drafted by City Engineer Haimes, with all items but hard surfacing of 6th Ave 8 from 15th St to Mayor Magrath Drive included. Ald. Four Blocks On City Hall Corner Approved By Counc

City council approved changes to old city hall property rules allowing up to four buildings on the northwest corner of Seventh Street and Fourth Avenue South. The deal with owner Matt McMahon waives penalties if the city completes a $150,000 building program by December 31, 1951, and subdivides the lot into up to four parcels.

Senate OKs Year Extension of Rural Mail Carriers Pay

The senate gave third reading to a bill extending for one year the supplementary payments to rural mail carriers. The measure has passed the commons and now awaits royal assent.

City Fathers Enter Real Estate Business with 133 Homes Planned

Aldermen discussed building sites for at least 133 homes in Lethbridge including 35 for two integrated housing projects under the Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation. Applications from Calgary builder S M Fengstad for 56 lots in Queen Victoria Park were reviewed, with the city manager to study his record before offering lots. The council also approved sales of 98 residential sites including wartime housing, and considered adding irrigation ditch and sidewalk costs to lot prices.
