65 Aboard C-46 Down In Atlantic As Engine Fails

A Westair Company C-46 crashed 275 miles east northeast of Miami. The USS Saufley saved 37 survivors in good condition, including the pilot, with Coast Guard and other vessels aiding in a major search for the remaining 28. PM Gives Warning at St Louis on Democracy and Freedom

Prime Minister St Laurent of Canada warned that the best defense against Communist infiltration is democracy and freedom. He spoke after receiving an honorary LLD at St Louis University, urging public confidence in high office and denouncing attacks on public figures. Hickory trees grown in Australia inspire future nut crop

A March 1945 note from Adelaide reports a grower received 120 nuts of shag bark hickory and pignut from North America and planted them in April. By 1946, 8 completed germination and faster growth than in Canada. A batch of 1,000 nuts yielded 400 thriving trees, with hopes Australia will produce own hickory nuts in about 30 years. Purge of 24 Communist Leaders Ordered by MacArthur

Tokyo June 6 Gen MacArthur ordered the Japanese government to purge 24 central committee members of the Communist party.
