GRANDVIEW MO July 23 A simple funeral service marked the end of Martha Ellen Truman 94 mother of the president. The silver casket was carried by four grandsons and two nephews to a waiting hearse as the 20 minute service closed. The president and family arrived from Independence Mo. for the service at Forest Hill cemetery in Kansas City. Rev Welborn Bowman led the ceremony and a caravan of about 16 cars followed to the grave. Flowers arrived despite a family rule against them. The few exceptions included Dr Joseph W Greene and Brig Gen Wallace H Graham. Messages poured in from around the world including Prime Minister Mackenzie King and a Buckingham Palace cable. Pope Pius sent a condolence from the Vatican.
