Waves of Communist troops smashed a wedge through American lines on the central front near Korea's 200 mile front. U S First Cavalry and 24th divisions countered but were outnumbered four to one amid heavy artillery and mortar fire. Reds, about 90 000 strong, pushed toward Pusan while air strikes target supply lines.
In Brussels and across Belgium workers walk out in anti Leopold protests. About 309,000 idle in Brussels as factories and stores close. Demonstrators clash with police near Laeken palace while 2,500 anti Leopold partisans enforce a street gathering ban. Antwerp port workers join the strike wave as rail lines are sabotaged and city chaos grows.
A grand state memorial at Westminster Abbey honors Canada's late prime minister William Lyon Mackenzie King. Delegations from Britain, the Dominions, and the United States attended led by Prime Minister Attlee. The service featured hymns and Holst music, ending with O Canada.

Edmonton July 28 The University of Alberta unveils a new coat of arms designed by professor H F Glyde from the fine arts department. The heraldic shield now conforms with other Canadian universities, replacing its former closeness to the provincial government arms.
Congress news notes the Banking Committee approves the presidents economic control plan 20 to 1 after rejecting Baruch substitute 10 to 9. Baruch vows to press fight in the next House session. Vinson backs Baruch, warning of inflation. Federal reports show a 46 percent jump in department store sales week over year and a 37 percent rise in sugar sales in early July. Truman seeks no price or rationing powers now but would request them if needed.
Russia ends its boycott of the United Nations Security Council. Malik will assume the August presidency and may veto or block future council actions on Korea. Unclear whether Russia will rejoin other UN bodies. Debate over Gen MacArthur's Korea war plan likely to bog down.

Regina's six day strike by Electrical Utilities Employees union shows some progress after talks with a mediator appointed by the city. Justice S E Richards of the Manitoba court of appeal led discussions on job classification differences, with wages left unresolved. About 120 workers walked out last Saturday over wage demands while incidents of sabotage and rocks being thrown at nonstrikers occurred. The mayor ordered curbs on police escorts for nonstrikers and the plant operates with skeleton staff as outages continue.
Guelph Ontario report says pork prices may fall later this year while beef stays high. Agriculture official L. W. Pearsall notes strong US beef demand and possible tariff changes supporting prices. Pork could dip after the Anglo Canadian bacon contract ends.
London reports bold new cancer methods using peacetime radioactive atoms from atomic ovens. Dr. D. W. Smithers and Dr. J. H. Muller describe injections of radioactive gold and zinc into the abdomen and veins, noting pain relief and potential lung cancer targeting while cautioning that early results do not prove a cure.
Ernest Bevin will return to London today to resume duties as foreign secretary after a holiday on the south coast and following an operation.
Canada will not send ground troops to Korea for now, Defence Minister Claxton said after a Toronto visit. No major Korea decisions were taken at the cabinet meeting and no special session was planned. Ottawa will proceed with ships and planes, including the destroyers Cayuga Athabaskan and Sioux and an RCAP transport squadron, to support United Nations efforts.

McChord Air Force Base reports the first arrival of RCAF North Star airlift planes bound for Tokyo in a 5000 mile, 23 hour mission. The 426 Transport Squadron under Wing Commander Campbell Mussells led the flight which departed last night, with ground crews prepared to service the Canadian aircraft along the northern Pacific route via the Aleutians.
