Stelco Head Sticks To His Wage Offer
OTTAWA July 23 CP The commons Industrial relations committee saw the wage dispute at three Canadian basic steel plants. H G Hilton president of the Steel Co of Canada Hamilton stuck to a 10 cent an hour raise, opposing union security. Union director CG H Millard pressed for increases up to 19 1 2 cents, pairing wage demands with union security. Hilton urged on the spot inspections at the Stelco plant where about 2,000 workers remained idle and criticized federal government inaction while preserving a stance that the company supports lawful collective bargaining. He argued most workers would be on the job if allowed to work under Canadian law and condemned what he called coercive tactics linked to U S labor legislation. The company said it does not oppose unions but protests coercion and law violations amid a government vote showing limited union membership. (Continued on Page Two.)
