Reds Smash German Line makes Orel pincers tighter

Soviet forces breached the last fortified Orel line on the 10th day of a broad offensive. Bolkhov fell as the Red army closed in from the north and east, with gains of four to five miles and German losses totalling thousands of troops, dozens of tanks, planes, and guns. Allied headquarters reported a 2400 mile round trip air raid on Surabaya Java by four engine bombers starting fires seen 140 miles away. In Bougainville Solomons area heavy bombers hit three enemy ships. Munda raid dumped 135 tons of bombs near the air base. Counter-attacks near Komiatum were repulsed with heavy losses. Allied fighters shot down two enemy planes over Rendova.

The Alberta Federation of Agriculture re elected all board members at divisional meetings during its eighth annual convention. More than 109 delegates and visitors discussed matters as eight resolutions were passed, with subsequent resolutions brought forward. The convention closes later, except for a board meeting. Roosevelt urges Rome be declared an open city
