Nazis claim bombers struck Moscow but the Soviet defense says no military objective was hit. About 200 German bombers were involved, fires started and civilians killed, though 17 were shot down. Berlin boasted of strong raids while Moscow reported effective air defense and warning sirens.
London University reports severe destruction of campus facilities and about 290000 library books damaged beyond repair in the annual briefing. Principal H L Eason stated the extent of damage and loss to property and resources.
Berlin protests Bolivia's expulsion of German Minister Ernst Wendler as an Nazi coup claim sparks tensions. The Bolivian move, part of purported plans to quell a coup, triggers a formal diplomatic protest and a demand for the Bolivian charge d'affaires to depart Germany within three days. Remaining legations stay intact.
Cairo reports swift action to curb bubonic plague at Port Said. Government agencies demolished a wooden section of the city and will relocate residents to stone housing as the minister of public health says only a dozen cases have been reported and the situation is well in hand.

German air forces struck Moscow in a nighttime raid described as retaliation for Bolshevist air attacks on Bucharest and Helsinki. The German high command claimed to have torn the Soviet front into disconnected groups as fires spread east of the Kremlin in the district.
Berlin July 22 The German news agency said women made up about one third of a Soviet regiment claimed annihilated northeast of Smolensk as Soviet forces tried to break a Nazi ring. Russians deny women serve in the Red Army, saying they are nurses or in auxiliary roles.
Nazi spokesmen claim a heavy air thrust against buildings of Soviet executive and administrative importance along the Moskva river bend. Berlin asserts power plants and party administrations were destroyed or badly damaged as leadership collapses and the drive toward the eastern front continues into the second month.
Col. W. C. Woodward, general assistant to Hon. C. D. Howe, minister of munitions and supply, announced at Vancouver on July 22 that he has resigned his Ottawa post. He said he tendered his resignation earlier and it was accepted, adding that his aim had been accomplished.
London reports Lord Snell telling the peers that Britain has left the Finnish government in no doubt that friendly relations with Helsinki might be reversed in light of events. He noted Britain ceased issuing navigation certificates for goods and offered no facilities for ships to proceed to Finland.
Royal Canadian Air Force officials announced the presentation of wings to graduates at No 5 bombing and gunnery school in Dafoe Saskatchewan on July 22. James A. Foran of Holden Alberta was among the graduates.
London July 22 Lord Beaverbrook appointed James Edward MacLaren a regional representative of the ministry of supply in the Midlands. MacLaren 44 born in Nova Scotia is a machine tool specialist and takes the post today.
Victoria July 22 Premier Pattullo announced the dissolution of the nineteenth British Columbia legislative assembly and said a general provincial election will be held in October on a date to be set. The manifesto cites coordinating taxation with Dominion war measures as the reason, seeking electors' expression. The legislature stood 31 Liberals, 8 Conservatives, 7 CCF, 1 Labour, 1 Independent.
Cairo July 22. Large fires were lit by waves of heavy bombers bombing Naples harbor and railway sidings Sunday night. Explosions accompanied the blazes. On the same night deck installations at Bengasi Libya were attacked with fires and explosions on the moles.
London report says a German bomber and a Royal Air Force plane collided over Britain during the night. Both crews were killed, according to an air ministry communique.
The Reconstruction Finance Corporation issued a 425 million dollar loan to Great Britain at 3 percent annual interest to be paid out in monthly installments of about 100 million. The loan carries a 15 year term with possible five year extension, secured by collateral worth about 500 million. The move, approved by President Roosevelt and spearheaded by Jesse Jones, aims to provide dollar exchange without forcing sales of securities.
Ankara July 21 Informed sources report German Ambassador Franz Von Papen told a Turkish official that the Russian British pact delays opportunities for peace He supposedly said Britain should have known Germany was ready to propose peace once Russia was crushed and voiced concern over delayed German progress against Russia.
Lionel Forsyth of Montreal, chief defence counsel in the Alberta supreme trial of 36 tobacco manufacturers, wholesalers and jobbers argued today that competition still exists to the fullest extent in the Canadian tobacco trade. He told the jury there is no evidence that trade agreements have lessened competition as the 14 week trial neared its end.
In Rome on July 22 the Italian high command reported that a British air raid on Mazzarino, Sicily, on July 20 killed 12 civilians and left 16 injured.
Eye witness account by Henry Cassidy describes a German air raid on Moscow, with home guards dropping incendiaries, fires, sirens, and shelter warnings. The reporter notes ruined roofs, a rescued youth, and the city’s recovery as dawn returns, age eighteen fighting a fire while heat and danger loom.

New York Times dispatch cites private advices from a European capital claiming Gen Erwin Rommel is recalled from Libya to assist Gen Field Marshal List in Russia. It says Gen Keitel and Gen Von Brauchitsch are sidelined due to poor early Russian campaign progress and notes a Moscow radio report alleging Himmler agents surround some generals and that several high officers have taken their own lives.
Calgary July 22 Imperial Oil Ltd announced higher posted prices for Turner Valley natural gasoline from valley absorption plants. 20 pound Reid vapor pressure gasoline now $2.28 per barrel, up 34 cents, and 17 pound Reid vapor pressure gasoline $2.44 per barrel, up 36 cents. First price rise since June 1938.
London July 22 Harry Hopkins United States lease lead administrator was received in audience by the King at Buckingham Palace. The King also received Prime Minister Churchill.
In Philadelphia a silver-plated loving cup turned up in the voluntary aluminum donation drive. The cup is inscribed Given by the German American Bundquoit tournament 1937.
Royal Air Force hit targets across western Germany Denmark the Netherlands Belgium and northern France in raids continuing from last night. Coastal targets near Calais Boulogne endured anti aircraft fire while English coast watchers heard explosions and saw flares. British bomber and fighter losses reported with four German fighters down and three British planes lost.
The Suez Canal was raided early today with only slight damage reported and no casualties according to an official statement. The incident occurred in Cairo on July 2.
