Trudeau says only a federal election could shift cruise testing stance

Trudeau told CBC North that a national consensus against testing the U S cruise missile in Canada would only arise in a federal election where leaving NATO was the main issue. He said no party advocates leaving NATO, and he would not run an election over the matter. He recalled northern visions and the 1960s Mackenzie River barge trip with Frank Scott to mark political evolution in the Northwest Territories.

Tennis ball hailstones hit Taber area crops

Hailstones the size of tennis balls hammered Taber Welling and Del Bonita area farms Tuesday evening with two storms. Firefighters defend 15.75 percent wage hike in arbitration

Lethbridge city firefighters say the 15.75 per cent award for 1983 was fair and a unanimous decision, though aldermen call it an unreasonable hike that could raise taxes by over 700,000. The deal covers 120 firemen with staged increases totaling 8.25 per cent in 1983.
