Reporters reach General Montgomery in a dusty Sicilian convoy camp as the 8th Army meets German forces for the first time near Catania. Peter Stursberg of CBC and the writer recount a grueling three day landing and a rare on the spot briefing.
Russians drove north and east of Orel 37 miles north and 25 miles east, sending ten Nazi divisions reeling through rain soaked forests. German claims spoke of relief attacks on a 90 mile front, while Soviet reports tallied heavy German losses, capturing towns and driving toward Catania in Sicily with Allied advances and large prisoner gains.
A British Columbia angler hooked a salmon only to reel in an eight pound catch. The ling cod swallowed the salmon and the hook, trapping the salmon inside the cod. After exposing the intruder by pulling the tail, the angler retrieved the eight pound salmon. The odd event, though curious, holds little practical importance.
London reports major Italian and Sicilian rail lines damaged or destroyed after a week of Allied air attacks. Palermo to Syracuse main line destroyed, Messina to Catania blocked, Messina to Palermo cut near junction with Catania line. Railway sidings at San Giovanni and rail links south of Reggio Calabria also damaged by direct hits.
Churchill and Roosevelt threaten Italy with surrender or ruin as Allied forces press across Sicily toward the mainland. The joint White House Downing Street note urges honorable capitulation to end Nazi Fascist rule, while pledging to destroy the false leaders and their doctrines.

Two men died early today trapped by methane gas in No 8 panel of the Cadomin No 8 shaft mine. The deceased are Fred Bealle fireboss of Ecson and John Smith miner of Cadomin. District Inspector Alex Mule to direct the inquiry.
An earthquake struck Jamaica this morning damaging stores and a church in Balaclava with heavier impact in north western parishes while Kingston felt a lighter shock. Early reports indicate no fatalities.
Alfred Roy 47 longtime editor in chief of L Evangeline and his assistant J Thomas LeBlanc 43 died suddenly in Moncton after Roy fell ill at home while writing an editorial tribute to LeBlanc both deaths attributed to heart attacks.

Allied reports from North Africa detail a night of air strikes off northern Sicily destroying tankers and damaging a merchant ship, with Canadian forces reportedly advancing in Vieszind, a key road junction north of Ragusa, amid heavy fighting.
Gen Ileuri Giraud, commander of French forces in Africa and joint chairman of the French National Liberation Committee, declares Germany defeated at a Ottawa press conference. He urges a strong French army with American, British and Canadian aid to liberate France and then Germany, and to free French POWs and civilians drafted for work. The frontier is on the Rhine.
Allied forces crushed Naples with a 24 hour bomber onslaught from North Africa and the Middle East. The Italian mainland port lay in ruins with a massive inferno, smoke rising over 20 000 feet as heavy formations struck the city and southern Italy air bases.
