McCarthy is at present looking- over the riding and sizing up the sit nation. There are people, however, who be- lieve that Mr. McCarthy will be the next Conservative leader, and that he will be the Conservative candidate in Gleichen. After the last convention the dele- gates whea questioned were always told to go tojsee Mr. McCarthy. That gentleman had "the entire secret of the doings. When a reiKjrter got that far he was informed that there was nothing at all happening, and nothing to report. That, too, may mean nothing, and, again, it may-: mean something. The Ottawa Conservatives have their eyes upon the West, believing that here is the place to win out on iome future election. They have ex- I aggerated the split in the Liberal par- ty, and believe that there is a chance for a sweep, which is a vain hope- That is the reason the Conservatives at Ottawa insisted upon opposition to Mr. Sifton, and dragooned the Edmon- ton leaders into the fight to oppose 4 him. It is believed that party influence could induce Mr. McCarthy to take up the battle in Alberta, though, doubt less the wider field is more congenial to him. Nearly all of the is in his constituency.
