Paris radio said the treason trial of Marshal Petain, former Vichy chief of state, may begin August 20 in the Paris senate building, a venue already famed for major French trials. The report came from London via Reuters.
Allied air forces hammered Japan in a record day of attacks. More than 1,500 planes from Admiral Halsey’s 3rd fleet struck Tokyo area airfields while 550 plus B-25s targeted five Japanese industrial centers from the Marianas in clear weather. Tokyo radio claimed additional B-29s and fighter-bombers hit Osaka Kobe and other targets as US forces pressed a carrier sweep.
Australia faces swarms of nuisance flies that attack sheep and cost farmers millions. CSIR Economic Entomology keeps breeding flies for testing and even created an automatic cat carcass turntable to study fly attraction. They aim to control noxious weeds using insects, noting prior success against prickly pear. Australia’s vast ant population may curb some pest insects.
San Francisco reports on July 10. Soho Tokutomi, a leading Japanese journalist, condemns the government for concealing war losses after Saipan and criticizes optimistic public statements since Guadalcanal. He cites Tokyo radio and Mainichi as evidence of the shift in public truth.
Washington July 19 Acting Secretary Grew said Japan was using purported peace feelers to sow dissension among the United States and Allies. He noted their aim is surrender short of unconditional terms, while asserting no peace offers have reached the U S from the Japanese government directly or indirectly.
Allied forces including casualties withdrew in good order from Ny a Aungkashe in the Sittang bend, east-northeast of Peguthe, as Japanese counter-attacks continued in Burma. Nine enemy-held villages fell to British 14th Army in the Irrawaddy valley, northwest of Rangoon, while air-ground assaults targeted Japanese forces near the Sittang bend. In Myitkyo area Japanese forces withdrew toward Thailand, after attacking the village of Gwegyi Auk. Four were injured in a Dunkerque ammunition dump explosion.
Reports from Hendaye say General Franco crossed the frontier to meet British officials at Bordaberry Chateau. London denies any planned meeting while Churchill vacations at Hendaye and weather prompts Mrs. Churchill to cancel a Spain visit. France Soir says Churchill may travel to Potsdam for the Big Three meeting.
A powerful electrical storm last night in the Lehigh Valley killed at least six people and caused widespread damage. Two houses were crushed by rocks as the Delaware River flooded, with four unidentified victims in Phillipsburg and one each in Bethlehem and Allentown. Over 25 Girl Scouts were stranded near Easton but rescued. Rainfall, flooding, and downed lines disrupted rail service and closed the Phillipsburg Easton bridge.
The U S Army orders personnel with under six months overseas service to receive foreign assignments if qualified and replaceable. Returning veterans will fill their former roles as quickly as possible, with the program to be carried out by May 1946.
Ottawa reports the Dominion government is considering municipal proposals on housing. A Canadian Federation of Mayors delegation pressed for a comprehensive low rental program after veterans' housing needs are met. They urged extending a housing act section to include municipalities provinces and private lenders and advocated wartime standard construction with basements and central heating.
Berlin officials announced that Soviet Marshal Zhukov American Lt Gen Clay and British Lt Gen Weeks agreed to feed about 3,000,000 German civilians from all Allied occupation zones in Germany. British and American transport would bring food and fuel to their sectors from western Germany. Berlin's German population in the British American zones totals 1,650,000.
Toronto chartered accountant J Grant Glassco said he would begin a fact finding inquiry under the munitions and supply act into Eldorado Mining and Refining Company operations. An order dated May 1945 gives him powers to inquire into expropriation and sale of its products. He called the investigation a department inquiry with sworn witnesses and secrecy due to Official Secrets Act and defence regulations.
EINDHOVEN Holland July 10. Six Canadian war artists from the field historical section have sketched in Dutch German and Italian front areas for the last three months. Their work will be shown at an Amsterdam exhibition opening Thursday and running to July 22. The exhibit includes 60 drawings and paintings and will later be sent to Ottawa.
A Paris desk report notes rapid Japanese withdrawals across Southeast Asia as Allied forces eye a fall and winter reconquest. The Hengyang corridor closes, Burma fends off scattered Japanese units toward Thailand, and plans focus on Sumatra Malaya and Singapore. Mountbatten commands reconquest of key southern territories amid shifting frontlines.
Allied dispatch reports Javanese and Dutch volunteers seized upper Balikpapan Bay fronts near Balikpapan in two amphibious actions. Dutch forces silenced river craft fire. Australian troops encircled refinery districts as Japanese defenders were driven from southern fields amid heavy air and ground assaults.
Paris July 10 AP two government officials say General de Gaulle will not be a candidate for the new national assembly to be elected Oct 14 and doubt he will align with any party. Voters will name 600 representatives to form the assembly which will elect a president of government who may choose his cabinet. de Gaulle could head the next government despite no official post. The election tests France’s drift left after years of political tension.
Mayor A W Shackleford told the Lethbridge Kiwanis club that the Civic Centre swimming pool wading pool and city hall would be built in 1946. He also said the city manager would propose a domestic light rate cut effective January 1, averaging 13 percent with a 13 to 17 percent range.
Chinese forces captured Tayu in Kiangsi province 173 miles northeast of Canton and 45 miles from the Kanhsien air base site, severing Japanese lines to isolate Kanhsien. Reports say pursuit continued toward Kanhsien while other units advanced toward Kweilin and Luichow areas, with gains near Tanchuk and the Chen nenkwang pass.
A German U boat commanded by Otto Wermourt with 34 crew surrendered to Argentine naval authorities at Mar del Plata. The port area was closed to the public after the craft appeared, and the submarine’s number was not released in the first communiqué. Allied navies were still hunting Nazi subs in the Atlantic two weeks after broadcasts ordered subs to seek Allied ports.
Reports say Genera Franco reached Hendaye near the coast where Prime Minister Churchill is staying but the British consul denied any planned conference. He also denied Mrs Churchill’s Spain visit while Col Julio Ortega’s presence prompted speculation of a misunderstanding.
