AIRO July 2 Allied forces on a line about 70 miles west of Alexandria repulsed heavy Axis attacks at El Alamein. The British communique said fighting results were not unfavorable and noted enemy tanks briefly broke a defended locality before being driven out. Allied bombers intensified strikes on Axis land forces, depots, and supply lines.
In Ottawa on Dominion Day July 2 Tom Reid Liberal New Westminster and Lt Colonel J A Ross Conservative Souris joined in criticizing Wartime Prices and Trade Board authority and its impact on agriculture. They warned the budget debate may end this week and the house will resume study of the conscription enabling measure.
The BBC Brains Trust discussion on bee color perception features Lord Harewood asking why bees, after gathering nectar from purple crocuses, hover over flowers of other colors. Edmonton July 27 Premier Aberhart urged creation of a debt tribunal with legislative authority to handle western farm debts and steer policy toward solving the economic crisis. He said federal machinery is needed and noted plans to seek Ottawa authorization, with Alberta ministers to meet in Remna July 1 and 11 to prepare submission.
London reports an overnight BBC French broadcast to coastal French residents from the Belgian frontier to the Fryer ev es. It warned of further operations against occupied France and stated coastal areas may become battle grounds with serious danger to civilians.
The United States state department announced a Wednesday night agreement among Canada Argentina Australia Britain and the United States on a world postwar grain framework. A pool of 100 million bushels for relief of war ravaged countries was proposed with Canada Britain and the United States contributing large shares. The plan covers future intergovernmental steps and a conference when propitious, with a London headquarters council and an immediate pool formation.
In Windsor England on July 2 Capt C E Mots Radclyffe Conservative was elected to the House of Commons in the Windsor by election. He defeated independent Lieut William Douglas-Home by 9557 votes to 6000. The result was announced after support from Prime Minister Churchill and government leaders.
Prime Minister Churchill secured a sweeping confidence vote in the British House of Commons by 475 to 25 after delivering a dire assessment of Allied positions in the Mediterranean and Middle East. He warned of a near disaster yet pinned hopes on reinforcements and noted the battle of Egypt as a setback but not yet decided.
WASHINGTON July 1 4 Germany has refused to provide safe conduct for future voyages of the liner Drottningholm and the United States therefore regards the exchange agreement as terminated the state department announced The agreement for exchange of nationals by the belligerent governments provided no continued voyages of the Drottningholm under safe conduct until completion of the repatriation of Americans held in Europe and Germans held there.
A July report from Ottawa says Canada is considering a glider training program in cooperation with air and army services. If plans progress, glider operations could begin this summer, with specialized training and transport arrangements similar to US methods.

London July 2 1943 Hugh Dellen minister of economic warfare announced creation of an international wheat pool. He said five governments Britain Canada United States Argentina and Australia would form a wheat council with equal representation and voting rights to administer the pool before a postwar wheat convention is adopted at a conference.
Ottawa reports that western beet sugar production in prairie provinces will exceed local needs by about 30 million pounds. Sugar administrator S. R. Noodle will absorb some freight to market the surplus in Eastern Canada. A new Quebec beet sugar factory is under construction with provincial aid, and a second factory is being contemplated.
London reports the appointment of Lord Portsi as minister of works and planning. He will oversee postwar reconstruction and ongoing public building projects, signaling a broad remit in shaping postwar infrastructure and development.
