Finance Minister Abbott announced resumed monthly drawings of 16 million dollars from the unused UK loan of 1.25 billion. The funds will back Canadian agricultural exports to Britain while aligning with US aid and Canada’s improving exchange position.
Ottawa reports 50 000 mental health patients under treatment, more than all cancer tuberculosis and polio combined. Minister Martin says clinics will be created, universities tapped for personnel, and modern equipment bought as Canada fights a rising mental health crisis.
Ottawa reports rising cigarette and cigar releases in November. Canada saw 1.479 billion cigarets released, up from October and November 1947. For January through November 1948, releases reached 14.942 billion, up nearly five percent from 1947. Cigar releases in November were 20.9 million, with increases in cut and plug tobacco. beer and spirits output declined in November, though the year to date remained higher than 1947.
Steve Marts, a miner at the Hy grade coal mine in Drumheller Alberta, is reported in good condition at a hospital after swallowing an alkaline solution from a bottle in the washroom, mistaking it for drinking water.

Seattle January 21. County Deputy Sheriff Pat Bliss predicts soon winning over King Abdullah of Trans-Jordan in a chess duel that started four years ago after Bliss learned of Abdullah's invitation. After 21 moves each, Bliss claims the king is "over a barrel," as Abdullah delegates Ali Abui to oversee a quiet period due to ongoing war.
Vancouver faced a blackout as snow worsened a local power shortage. Rationing began at midnight with BC Electric Co. prepared to cut off service to violators. officials warned of continued outages amid forecasts of more snow and a milder afternoon.
Dr T T Shields urged dismissal of Dean W Gordon Brown from the Toronto Baptist seminary at a noisy gathering of over 1500 in Toronto. Brown had left the seminary with most students to form the Canadian Baptist Seminary. Shields warned interrupters to sit down and threatened police if needed.
A 12 year old Boy Scout named Ricketts rescued infant David Bond after the baby fell into an air vent feeding a hot furnace in a George Street home. He disassembled the vent and pulled out the soot covered child unharmed after the mother called the fire department. The Scout said he had earlier retrieved toys from the vent and knew how to open it.
Winnipeg January 21 Delegates to the prairie roadbuilders convention hear a federal ban on American machinery imports hinders road work and may prompt a request to permit US equipment. N J Vadeboncoeur cites the ban as limiting contracts. Franks Doncaster denounces the Municipal Act tax on contractor equipment as vicious and unfair.
Allahabad obituary reports Sir Te} Ba hadur, 73, a respected Indian lawyer and Liberal leader. In Canada Fred Settle, aged 7., led internment camp duties at Gravenhurst and Petawawa during the last war. Windsor Ontario notes Major Lillian Clarke, former Salvation Army worker.
Western Canada expresses moderately enthusiastic reaction to the Anglo Canadian wheat agreement terms setting a $2 a bushel price for Canadian wheat. Premier T. C. Douglas calls the price reasonable for the last year of a four year deal. A F Sproule and W J Parker also praise the arrangement as satisfactory and pleasing. Adverse critique centers on a clause about compensation for lower than market prices in early years.
Chains in the metropolitan area trimmed top-grade butter by four cents to 69.1 cents per pound. Grade A white eyes fell two cents per dozen and were sold at 69 to 71 cents in self service supermarkets.

The measure would sustain commitments when current law lapses in 1950 and argues long terms lessen the risk of ruin for primary producers. Oscar Peake countered the drawbacks of such cross government pacts.
