The United States granted Israel a 35 million dollar loan immediately and 65 million more this year, moving toward full de jure recognition after the January 25 elections. Officials say de facto recognition already exists since May, with full diplomatic recognition likely soon after.

Factors include 40 hour week, higher production costs, reduced mine output, and market losses. Net loss projected for 1948 around $90,000 after a 1947 profit of $20,782.

Summerside P E I January 20 Senator Brewer Waugh Robinson aged 58 died at his home after a five day illness. A Liberal to the Prince Edward Island Legislature elected in 1939 he served in WWI and overseas in WWII with Canadian Legion War Services. He was summoned to the senate April 9 1945 and held roles as rancher, director of Prince Edward Island Pool Limited, president of Robinson's Mill and Bakery Ltd and mayor of Summerside in 1936 37. He is survived by his widow and five sisters. There are 84 Liberals in the senate with 15 Progressive Conservatives and 17 vacancies.
Jan 26 Moxtmrat. Tiny Armand Bevebsard, six months, was snatched from his crib by an unidentified woman who offered to adopt him. Police recovered the infant and questioned both women as they pursued truth behind the alleged kidnapping.
Ottawa reports an urbane Montrealer will inform Canadians he requires between 750 and 850 a minute in the next fiscal year to ease the national debt hangover. Finance Minister Abbott seeks over 3.4 billion to cover interest, a sum about six times most federation revenues and near the prewar budget level. The net debt at March 1941 stood at 12.372 billion, about 1 000 per Canadian, with the balance to be repaid by taxes and assets. experts warn the figure will circle back like a hangover, and caution against heavy calculation as it worsens the burden.
London January 20 Prime Minister Attlee told the commons the government stands behind an order that sent RAF planes on reconnaissance over the Israeli Egyptian border. Five planes were shot down on January 7. Attlee said the government is responsible and prepared to answer for it after Churchill pressed for which ministers ordered the mission. Air Secretary Arthur Henderson noted flights were halted.
Montreal report of the Newsprint Association for Canada shows apparent total consumption of newsprint in the United States in December at 466,279 tons, up 26,164 tons from December 1947. Stocks of all consumers increased by 2,863 tons to 612,551 tons, with December end stocks at 507,219 tons.
