The Indian delegation arrives in New York to press their case against Pakistan. Barrister B C Setaraid from India is directing reading before the court as the dispute unfolds.
British Columbia and Alberta labor leaders discuss joint conciliation as 10 600 United Mine Workers stranded in a strike. Labor Minister Wismer says cooperation with Alberta authorities may help end the wage dispute and avoid further disturbances.
Mohandas Gandhi ended his 121 hour 45 minute fast and pledged friendship among Hindus Muslims and Sikhs. Leaders signed a seven point program and a 136 member religious committee will meet nightly to review progress toward peace amid riots and Kashmir tensions. Gandhi plans to travel to Pakistan to promote truth and non violence after harmony is ensured. The Indian government granted pardons to Pakistan soldiers accused or convicted since Independence Day.

A midwinter cold snap softened in the Midwest but lingered in the East and South. The Chicago weather bureau noted subzero readings in New England with 26 below in Phillipsburg Pennsylvania and Memphis reporting 3 above zero after snow. President Truman’s fuel order reduced heating consumption as 25 deaths were attributed to cod conditions across 12 states.
Snow arrived Saturday in 75 carloads consigned to New York mines. A train of empty cars stood ready to pick up anthracite as snow blankets the region. Men were brought in to unload the white cargo and supply heating fuel to New Yorkers.
