A major daylight raid by the Royal Air Force targets Nazi ports with heavy explosions signaling a fierce bombing attack. Royal forces press the offensive, aiming to disrupt German maritime operations and impede shipping along key coastal targets.
British bombers hit Wilhelmshaven and credit the raid with strong results despite icing and storms. The day mission also attacked Emden Ostend Calais Boulogne, with five planes missing. Fire and smoke reported as crews battled blazes. continuation noted on page three.
Two large British vessels the Alameda Star and Zealandic were torpedoed in the northwest of Ireland, signaling distress with unclear outcomes. Zealandic first, then Alameda Star reported damage as Axis submarines reportedly withstand winter seas. RAF raids hit Catania airfield in Sicily with fires and destroyed aircraft, while Malta faced heavy German dive bombing with five planes down on each side.
King decorates 25 Royal Air Force officers at an East Anglia harbor ceremony. Sixteen Distinguished Flying Crosses and four Distinguished Flying Medals are awarded to airmen who have accounted for 58 enemy planes. Queen Elizabeth, wearing a diamond RAF brooch, stands beside the King during the decorations.
A worker on a construction site fumbled an I beam injuring his ankle and later could not return to work. Nine weeks later he rode again in a patrol wagon to jail with other men in a growing fake accident insurance racket. Their scheme used staged injuries and paraffin to claim disability. London cable report says a northwest Canada based detachment of young men trained under the Empire air scheme has arrived. Recruits come from across Canada and include many wireless operators. The group also contains an Australian flying officer and several sergeants from New Zealand.
Belgrade dispatch reports rising friction between Soviet Russia and Romania and rumors that Hitler plans a German protectorate in Romania. Rail traffic on Hungarian lines, save international trains, halted last night. Clashes on the Russian Romanian border reportedly kill five to ten Romanian guards nightly along Bessarabia and Bucovina. Observers speculate Moscow may press for Moldavia and northern Dobruja if needed.
Admiral Yates Stirling Jr urged wartime measures after blasts and fires started by incendiary bombs in Bristol during German air attacks. He called for U S fleet concentration in the Atlantic and immediate convoy for war matériel to Great Britain.
War Secretary Stimson told the House Foreign Affairs Committee he fears a crisis within the next 60 to 90 days if Congress does not rapidly pass the British aid bill. He pressed for power to accelerate armament shipments to Britain and rejected delays amid ongoing debate with Republican members.
British communique reports Bristol, a key shipping hub on Britain's west coast, suffered fires from incendiaries and earlier raids struck London and southern towns. Many blazes controlled, property damage limited to commercial buildings, casualties not large. Incendiaries also hit another unidentified south coast town. over 60 fires started in that raid.
The Royal Air Forces 57th casualty list issued last night lists 357 names with four Canadians among the casualties. An officer of the Royal Canadian Air Force is reported missing. No one listed from Alberta.
Western Air Express Corp, a United States company incorporated in Delaware in 1928, has been registered under Alberta’s foreign company provisions. The firm is authorized to transport mail, passengers and property by air and recently gained rights to operate between Lethbridge and Great Falls, Montana.
Japan launches an anti American press drive to persuade Washington to cut aid to democracies. The campaign frames U S and Britain as aggressive and urges rapid moves toward a southward program in the Indies and Pacific. The Tokyo based effort mirrors Berlin and Rome styles of portraying neighbors as threats. Continued discussion expected on Page Three.
A board of inquiry led by Squadron Leader D S Blaine begins at Pincher Creek into yesterday’s Avro Anson crash from Macleod Service Air Training School. Three crew members Pilot Officer R J Mansfield RAF LAC Alexander Reith and LAC M J Strong are reported in favorable condition after transfer to St Vincent Hospital and the wreckage is guarded as the investigation continues.
Dr Joseph Sirois a 59 year old professor of constitutional law at Laval University and former Rowell Sirois commission chair died in Quebec hospital after weeks of illness. He had led the Dominion unemployment insurance commission since 1938 and became chair following Newton W Rowell’s resignation.
Dr Sirois a native of Quebec and appointed chairman of the unemployment insurance commission when formed last September 24. He was to serve ten years at a salary of 12000 dollars a year. Continued on page three.
DN B claimed the battleship Malaya reached Gibraltar with extensive damage from air attack. There was no British comment on the claim.
