Moscow reports Dol V. Vasiheff of the Red Army stating Britain aims to end the war in Africa to focus on Europe. He cites the British offensive in Africa as already producing positive results and says Britain intends decisive action in the European theatre.
Snowy conditions limited German air activity over Britain but two bombers crossed the Dover Strait and dropped 16 bombs on a south east village with no casualties reported. A lone raider hit Scotland with a bomb and machine-gun fire, while planes appeared over the East Anglia area. The air ministry noted continued activity and referenced attacks on Norway bases.

Greek forces resumed their advance toward Berati in central Albania after repelling two Italian counter-attacks described as limited. Italian efforts to hold new lines faced snowbound, stiff resistance as Greeks pressed from Klisura northward with heavy artillery against positions along the Khursa sector and coast. Weather hindered air activity and operations. a government spokesman said the first counter-attack was repelled with wounded left behind.
EDMONTON January 15 The new session opening February 20 will appoint a speaker with Hon Peter Dawson MLA for Little Bow favored for the post. Huis selected by Social Credit caucus last fall. The Thai high command reported a French Indo-Chinese attack on the northern frontier repulsed with heavy losses. A French officer was killed and a large quantity of arms and ammunition seized. No fighting in the eastern sector as French retreated and Thai forces advanced.
The French merchant ship Mendoza loaded with food for blockaded France was reported from Punta Del Este to have sailed eastward in a fresh bid to pass a British warship. The British announced the ship would be intercepted at sea if navicert clearance fails. Uruguay questioned if its waters were violated when the ship earlier turned back. A British seaplane forced landed in Maldonado Bay after running out of fuel, its three crew members rescued.
DETROIT Jan 15 A strike that has closed four of five Eaton Manufacturing Company plants across two states and threatened defence orders appears near settlement after night talks among the company and two rival unions. Federal labor conciliator James F. Dewar said he was hopeful for a quick end. British sources report native guerrillas have reduced Italian control to only towns and main roads in parts of Ethiopia. Tribesmen raid interior posts and ambush convoys as British patrols harass Italian forces near the Sudanese border. Haile Selassie’s exiled government connections and arms smuggling are noted amid clashes at Gubba near the frontier.
New York reports Public Health Service medical director Louis Schwartz says dermatitis outbreaks linked to synthetic resin finishes are spreading across Canada and the United States. Dr. J T Phair in Toronto notes no outbreak from fabrics with resin finishes, only a few isolated dermatitis cases from wearing certain underwear.
Premier Hepburn of Ontario told the Dominion provincial conference that further talks must not rely on the Rowell Sirois commission. He denounced Finance Minister Tisley’s reasons as funny money and said Alberta Premier Aberhart’s theories fade in significance. He refused to engage with the Sirois report.
Four children aged four to seven were burned to death when flames swept through the home of Raoul Bouchard in Jonquiere Quebec. His wife and another child escaped by leaping from a window as firefighters searched the ashes for the fourth body. The town lies about ten miles from Chicoutimi in northeastern Quebec.
London report shows Britain’s wartime outlay now around $61.62 million daily, with $45 million daily in 1940. For the first 11 days of 1941, army navy and air force costs averaged about $55 million daily, the remainder covering interest debt and ordinary expenditures.
Reports in Washington estimate that since Nazi occupation 22 months ago Czechoslovakia has suffered losses of at least 1 billion dollars and annual tribute taxes of about 100 million to finance the Reich’s war against Britain. German troops seized key government and industry roles after the March 15 1939 invasion, with about 500000 occupying positions in Bohemia Moravia and Slovakia.
