British forces reported to have carried off at least nine daring motorcycle raids into German occupied France with incursions deep inland toward Amiens. Royal Air Force bombers hit Bremen for a third night in a row, turning the industrial area of the Bremen seaport into a sea of flames. Washington Jan 4 A P Chairman Carl Vinson of the United States House naval committee announced a widespread probe of the navy aircraft and shipbuilding programs. The first two 35000 ton battleships will join the fleet next July and September, the North Carolina to be commissioned July 15 and the Washington September 30. Construction began in 1987.
Ottawa reports the formation of a Canadian Armored Corps built from the 1st Armored Brigade at Camp Borden. Four units are training on former US tanks and prewar Canadian light tanks. The corps will operate as a unitary formation, modeled after the RAMC and RCAF Pay Corps, not as a regimental army.
London reports indicate German warplanes pounded Bristol with long lasting raids last night. The assault produced considerable damage to buildings and fires, with four firemen and two soldiers killed while combatting blazes. Incendiaries fell across the city and alarms sounded in London as fires were brought under control by morning.
British headquarters report Australian troops penetrated the center of the Bardia defenses on a nine mile front in Italian Libya.
