Reports from Vichy indicate Germany is removing French civilians from the English Channel coast. Unconfirmed but credible, the action may signal preparations for an invasion of Britain or serve to prevent information leakage. Removal appears to have started mid February, possibly clearing coastal zones to 22 miles inland.
A.P. dispatches from Bucharest report a mass movement of German troops in battle dress through the city with main streets reserved for military use and business at a standstill. No direction given. EDMONTON Feb 28 Debate on the speech from the throne will enter its fourth day in the Alberta legislature today with an address by Lionel Tellier independent St Albert. Tellier moved for adjournment of the debate at 11 pm MST after nine speakers had taken part five in the afternoon and four at night. William Tomyn S.C. Willingdon is expected to follow Tellier.
The Winnipeg Free Press reader reveals a tale of a white footed mouse nest found in a grain drill. A mother mouse carried five tiny blind youngsters clinging to her nipples as she moved, testing how strong a pull would need to be to release them. Senator Frederick Van Nuys of Indiana endorsed the lend lease bill and opposed amendments that would bar sending American troops abroad He warned that such limits would entice Hitler Mussolini Stalin and Japan to press their ambitions He spoke in a written statement to save Senate time.
In Italian Somaliland along the Juba river, West African Gold Coast troops shattered an Italian division. British troops captured three Italian brigadiers, two veterans of the First World War. Dispatches say at least 32000 Italians were taken prisoner as Gelib fell and Italian defenses from Harar attempted to stem the attack.
Royal Air Force bombers escorted by Hurricanes hit the Italian airdrome at Valona Albania and a dogfight left seven fascist pursuit planes shot down. Two Italian planes collided. Greek high command said Italian forces were trapped by Greek fire on the Albanian front with heavy losses. Yugoslav reports noted rain and snow hampering Greek supplies to the front and some units on reduced rations.
Chinese authorities report that a theatre collapse in Kumming on February 28 left more than 200 feared dead or injured. Initial estimates say all victims are Chinese, with many unaccounted as rescue efforts continue through the late hours.
London February 28 German pilots raided East Anglia and targeted farm stock. The BBC reported the only confirmed success was the destruction of 50 chickens when a bomb hit a hen-house.
Two military aircraft carried the bodies of Sir Frederick Banting and two companions from Musgrave Harbor to Botwood near Newfoundland after a plane crash in a remote area. Thick weather delayed transport, and officials said the bodies would be flown to Canada the next day.
Edmonton Feb 28 N B James declared in the Alberta legislature that Premiers Aberhart Hepburn and Pattullo saved Canadian unity by refusing to go into committee to discuss the Sircis report at the Dominion provincial conference in Ottawa last month. The conference collapsed when the premiers declined to discuss the report. James spoke during the throne speech debate. other speakers included J C Mahaffy and A V Bourcier with Percy McKelvey noted.
