Allied air offensive across Germany and the Marianas continues with heavy bomber strikes on Augsburg Regensburg and other targets. Nimitz reports losses light for the U.S. while Japanese planes sustain heavy hits and many are destroyed on the ground.
Allied HQ reports German forces renewed shelling on the beachhead south of Rome while making a failed stab on the right flank near Cisterna and Carroceto. In Cassino and Sardinia theater, heavy shelling continues with patrols, air actions, and 93 German planes destroyed. Regensburg raid yields 95 total German fighters destroyed.
Bennett Cerf recounts a Saturday Review piece about a Royal Navy carrier in the Mediterranean where an afternoon concert goes on despite a plane-elevator malfunction. A mechanic’s button sends the elevator up and down mid Carmen while the band and conductor keep tempo.
Alberta reports urge larger mothers allowances and reorganization of child welfare services in Edmonton Calgary and Lethbridge. Proposals call for combined clinics and detention homes to examine delinquent and neglected children under psychiatrists and trained welfare workers to coordinate agencies and improve treatment and education.
Soviet units make rapid advances as White Russian forces counter attack. Red Army closes on Pskov from northeast and southeast, shelling outer defenses. Pskov’s rail hub and Porkhov near the east front reported under pressure with multiple columns advancing from Rogachev toward Bobruisk and Minsk.
A bill sets up a welfare commission of three to five members led by the superintendent of child welfare as chairman. It will supervise all government wards and immigrant children, enroll wards, visit homes and institutions, and aid minister in act administration. An investigation committee of three or more will vet foster applications and maintain records, with continued coverage on page three.
The House of Commons will consider army items in the 3.65 billion war appropriation resolution. Yesterday it approved a motion to create a special committee on radio broadcasting while speakers criticized CBC news emphasis on CPC policies and Gen. LaFleche noted no CBC aid manager recommendation yet.
In Alexandria Louisiana six bomber crew members died and four were injured when their aircraft crashed during landing at the Alexandria Army Air Field. In Grand Island an eight-man crew perished with two injured when a bomber attempting a routine takeoff crashed. Lt Col E G Ford reported the fatalities.
Marine Lt Col James Roosevelt eldest son of the president received the Silver Star as an observer during the capture of Makin in the Gilbert Islands last November. He already holds the Navy Cross for his part in the Marine raider attack at Makin on August 17, 1942, with Col Evans F Carlson.
Ottawa Feb 26 The house of commons closed a week with a motion by War Services Minister LaFleche to set up a special committee on radio broadcasting. Heated exchanges followed about CBC news emphasis and politics. M J Coldwell accused of fearing national socialism. LaFleche denied the claim. Speaker Glen ruled no breach after Coldwell defended his position.
Allied headquarters report heavy air strikes over the Bismarck archipelago and New Guinea. bombers hit Rabaul supply bases and airfields at Keravat Vunakanau and Vunapope. US ground forces advance near Madang, with Wewak bombed. In 23 days this month 1 829 tons of bombs dropped and 230 planes shot down.
Tokyo dispatch says a multi day battle for Guam rages as Japanese garrison fights off a U.S. naval force. Allied actions in Anzio and Burma yield heavy casualties, with about 15,000 on German and Japanese sides reported as losses. Tito meets Churchill’s son in London.
