William Morrison, 71, returned from retirement to win the Governor's Cup at a 150th anniversary horse race on the Falkland Islands riding Ballena. Morrison previously shepherded on the islands before moving to England with his wife.

A 31 year old Lethbridge woman faced two counts of second degree murder two counts of arson and one of break and enter after a December 13 fire in North Cone. Susan Rose Bernice Janni appeared in court with case adjourned to 9 30 am pending psychiatric examination. The blaze killed eight year old Nemer Scholten and Benjamin Scholten and left their sister Dineke Johanna hospitalized. Fire investigators cited a hot ember from a cigarette as likely cause though the family disputed lamp fault. A community trust funded rebuilding of the gutted home.
In rural China the murder of female babies is reported to be rising under the one child rule. The government aims to keep population under 1.2 billion by 2000 with fines up to 2000 dollars for extra children. Official reports recount grisly killings of hundreds of girls. Daughters cost money and provide dowries. sons inherit, work, and care for parents.
About 50 union leaders and Yvon Charbonneau the federation head face charges under Quebec’s back to work law ending the teachers strike. Some 20 unions are charged including la Centrale de l’enseignement du Quebec and chief negotiator Robert Bisaillon for illegal strike actions.

Duff meets Jean Louis Montagne of Quebec for the gold Wednesday night.
Western Catholic bishops say Pope John Paul II may visit Western Canada in September 1984 for a 10 day trip including three days in the West. Negotiations with the Vatican are under way to arrange the first papal visit to Canada. The Vatican has announced a Canadian visit but has not specified duration or western stops.
The governing Progressive Conservatives extended their majority as Sid Dutchak, a 32-year-old lawyer, defeated NDP veteran Jerry Hammersmith in the Prince Albert Duck Lake byelection. Dutchak won 4,256 votes to 3,364, a previously narrow margin in the seat.
Winter City aldermen finished trimming the 1983 operating budget, pushing property taxes up about seven percent for the average $30,000 home. The increase, down from the initial 8.9 percent, will fund tax relief from surplus and revised revenues while leaving over $1 million in surplus for future tax stabilization.
