Johann Hagenbeck Dies After War in Nazi Camp

Carl Hagenbeck’s son Johann Heinrich Hagenbeck, who advanced humane, barrier-free zoos and spacious enclosures, died behind bars in a Nazi internment camp. Mediterranean Danger Area designated in central sea lanes

London February 22 The admiralty warned ships that two large triangular zones in the central Mediterranean between Italy and Africa are dangerous to shipping. Circles warned of mines bombs torpedoes and shells though not declaring a minefield. Area runs about 600 miles from the heel of the Italian coast to Benghazi, then to Tunisia and Sardinia.

Italian unit flees into trackless desert after British advance

London Feb 22. A Reuters dispatch from the East African front says the entire 49th battalion of the Italian colonial infantry is believed dying of thirst after being driven from Armada, Italian Somaliland, by British forces 11 days earlier. The battalion fled south toward Gelib, 80 miles away, with a priest dying of thirst and a doctor returning to surrender to the British. Jumbo Falls Nairobi reports the port of Jumbo near Chisimaio at the mouth of the Juba river in Italian Somaliland has fallen to South African troops, officials said.

Shanghai dispatch reports travelers from Saigon describe Japan's growing military and political control of French Indo China. They say Japan aims at the Netherlands East Indies using Saigon as a sea and air base, having undermined French authority and dictating internal external affairs.
