Berlin reports a German source says Naz submarines are sinking comparatively new British ships as many U- boat crews shift to prepare for Hitler’s spring offensive. The note ties the campaign to Hitler’s January speech promising intensified U-boat action.
Representative Andrew Edmiston proposed a military airline from Minneapolis through Canada to Fairbanks Alaska as a channel for Britain to compensate the United States with war materials. He said Canada would grant the right of way as part of the British Empire and in exchange for material aid. The aviation sub-committee member noted Canada’s kinship with Britain.
Ottawa war departments employ over 50 but possibly near 75 dollar a year men who serve without salaries paying their own living expenses. London reports Britain may ask Canada and the United States to help gain access to Eire ports as a counter to German U-boats. Ottawa offered no official comment though former Conservative leader R J Manion voiced interest, noting Irish Canadians favor aiding Britain and suggesting Irish-Canadians inform De Valera that they back the war effort.
Cairo dispatch reports British forces crossed the Juba River north of the bridgehead in Italian Somaliland and seized 5,576 colonial troops and 745 Italian regulars on the Eritrean front. Tank losses include 107 Italian tanks. Libyan activity remains limited as Eden and Dill meet in Cairo to discuss policy shifts.

In Ottawa on February 21 opposition leader Hanson and Defence Minister Ralston rebuked Liberal MP Jean Francois Pouliot for attacking defence department officials and the Winnipeg Free Press. Pouliot spoke of high level intrigue and a possible betrayal of Mackenzie King, prompting Ralston to defend his colleagues and Pouliot to defend his actions. Hanson urged calm and warned Parliament against further disruption.
London reports confirm Swansea endured heavy German air raids for a second night with fires and widespread destruction to commercial buildings and dwellings. The Bramble mine sweeper destroyed one attacking German plane. another plane ditched with no survivors. London and eastern England faced multiple raid alarms.
Tokyo reports Foreign Minister Yosuke Matsuoka warns continued defence build up by Britain and the United States in the South Pacific could create dangerous conditions. He hopes Anglo Saxons refrain from provoking Japanese opinion.
A French communique says the council of ministers discussed Far East questions and interior organization. Jacques Chevalier is expected to resign as education minister soon, the fifth ministerial change since January. Abel Bonnard, member of the French Academy, may succeed him in a move seen as aiding France Germany collaboration.

Finance Minister Ilsley announced a $1,300,000,000 war appropriations bill for the next year. He said more than $150,000,000 in additional war service costs may be needed, with a possible supplementary request before year end due to wartime uncertainties.
In Haiphong, French Indo China, sources say a serious dispute arose between Japanese and French authorities over 10 million dollars of United States and Chinese owned goods stored in Haiphong warehouses. Japan demanded French requisition and transfer, but France refused to assist unfair seizure, saying Japan must seize the goods and bear responsibility. Supplies include American trucks and tires en route to China when Haiphong route was cut last September.
In Ottawa on February 21 G K Fraser Conservative MP Peterborough West urged in the house of commons that J G Gardiner vacate all but one cabinet post. He proposed Gardiner become minister of agriculture or minister of national war services or even minister of garbage collection, arguing for a single portfolio.
Rescue crews dig through rock and coal at Cadomin Mountain Park mine seeking James Schultz entombed by a Tuesday rockslide. Cadomin lies about 175 miles southwest of Edmonton as crews press to locate him.
