Winnipeg developments help to give the lie direct to all alien affrighted whimperings from party watch-dogs. Three of the city's organizations which have always kept rigidly from pronouncements on party politics, lately passed resolutions for wartime reorganization of the Dominion.,''government;. The resolution of the; Canadian club, which was carried unoniiiioiicly 13 for pollco andffr/e protection according to figure* compiled by. Mayor Hardie, commissioner of public safety. In 1B13, the two departments, then under sep-; arate-heads, .spent u total of $5!),-922.67. In 1916, the two departments, under one head for practically the whole .of the year, spent only ?30,-773.60. The big reduction is in the police department, which has been reduced from '20 men to six. In 1913 the po-l Hce'required $26,569 as against a mere | $4,770 last year.: . j The average expenditure of the two! departments, taken separately for the past four years was: 1913 V..................$29,061.33 ' 19.14................... 26,583.73 1915 -V.................. lft,569.S2 1916 ;.................. lf),3S6.80 It is expected that the cost of the two departments will be even less this year as the amalgamation under one chief did not take place until after some months of 1916 had passed. -To Prevent The Grip Colds cause Grip-Laxative Bromo Quinine removes the cause. Dcvenish, managing director of the United "Oils, is In the south country and the understanding is that he is arranging to drill move wells in the district southeast of Lethbridge. On a visit to Lethbridge last rail, he stated to the Herald'that his company intended to drill' again this spring, and asserted his conviction that they would yet discover oil in quantities. It is understood' his present, visit to the south is for ,the purpose of locating the scene of this year's activities. While the company is very keen on bringing in an oil well in the south, it is hardly likely they will drill far from the ^site of their present well at Foremost where they brought in last' year one of the largest gas producers in the province, for it is understood that the company is considering the possibility of finding a market for their gas,, with pipe lines to Winnipeg and to Montana smelters among the projects being most seriously considered. Among other projects, it is very likely that Foremost will consider the acquisition of a gas supply from the United wells this year. The cost of piping gas from the present well near the town would be in the neighborhood of $50,000, and the citizens believe that the returns from such an expenditure would be more than enough to pay all charges against the bonds it would be necessary to issue. Foremost is growing rapidly, and with an inexhaustible gas supply for the town, it would attract many more citizens who expect to see the town become an important centre on the completion of the Lethbridge-Weyburn line.
