OTTAWA, Feb. 18 61 The board of transport commissioners announced removal of maximum loading restrictions on railway freight cars effective April 1. Origin ally set by the Prices Board and kept in 1947, penalties once applied for underloading are eliminated. The move aims to maximize use of scarce tonnage.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee called in State Secretary Acheson for a closed session to study and word the Atlantic defence treaty. If approved, the draft heads to Canada Britain and four Western European states for negotiations. The main issue is a defence clause ensuring joint resistance to any armed attack.
Dr. George J. Trueman president emeritus of Mount Allison University and noted Canadian educator died in hospital at Sackville? NE at 76 after a stroke last Friday. He was born January 31, 1872 in Point de Bute NB and served as Mount Allison president from 1923. The long-time educator held numerous provincial and regional posts including Mental Hygiene Council NB and education councils. He retired in 1945.
The Left Hand Corner reports Australia’s 1948 fiscal deficit more than doubled the prior year. Prime Minister Joseph B. Chifley told the House the country was $236,480,000 in the red, with imports from Canada and the U S totaling $263,040,000 and exports $128,320,000 leaving an immediate shortfall of $134,720,000. Gold production and IMF remittance figures balanced the picture somewhat.
Newfoundlanders and Canadian MPs debated the correct pronunciation of Newfoundland during a February parliamentary session. F D Shaw noted at least seven pronunciations and urged official guidance while Claxton admitted Newfoundland delegates also varied.
In Cincinnati on February 18 Mrs. Dorothy Zenni, 33, won a divorce from Ralph Zenni, 34, after telling Judge George E. Kearns that her husband twisted her toes until she screamed. The incident was cited as the basis for the dissolution of their marriage.
In Ottawa Manitoba government lawyers won permission to probe how the CPR and CNR have pursued joint economies under the 1933 act. Chief Commissioner Archibald allowed evidence on economies to justify freight-rate requests as the inquiry noted a 1948 CNR deficit exceeding 31 million dollars and a brighter 1949 outlook with a 2 million profit to cover higher rates.

Calgary reports a 15 cent per ton rise likely for lump stove and stoker coal sizes to fund a 10 cent per ton boost in the United Mine Workers welfare fund. The Domestic Coal Operators' Association expects price changes to take effect soon across Lethbridge Drumheller Saunders and Coalspur regions, though some sizes may not rise due to extra costs from the union agreement. Lump coal in Calgary now at 11.75 a ton and egg coal at 11.75. previous rates cited.
Beverly Hills police announced the seizure of more than $100 in jewels and $20,000 worth of furs from a Los Angeles apartment. The discovery followed a Cleveland inquiry into Gerard Graham Dennis alias Jerry McKay, a fugitive connected to jewel robberies in Toronto and Montreal. A 24 year old woman, Betty V Tirchie, was arrested on burglary suspicions, and an adjacent occupant Julius Bruck the jeweler was booked on receiving stolen property suspicions.
Montreal February report states Frank and Helen Perrault, siblings of convicted killer Douglas Perrault, were arrested on evidence they aided in the planned escape of Perrault and Noel Cloutier from Bordeaux jail last November. Cloutier and Perrault were sentenced to death for murdering two policemen during a September bank robbery. Police indicate outside help was to assist the escape following the jail break.
Edmonton February 18 Irea Colborne said in the Alberta legislature that Saskatchewan CGF party members were guilty of dishonest electioneering in the Alberta campaign last summer. He denounced Premier Douglas and others for extolling Saskatchewan’s health scheme while aware of upcoming cost changes.

The 22 year old Bery Cash was secretly voted by students three days ago. results were due that night amid campus whispers that the negro co ed was prettiest of them all.
Glory Be Dublin reports Parliament rejected a bill that would have made it illegal for an Irishman to buy a drink of whisky on Sunday. The vote stood 65 to 41 in a decisive division.
Ottawa reports royal assent expected this afternoon for the Newfoundland omnibus bill and union terms. The measures will join Newfoundland as Canada’s 10th province on March 3 after Senate approval. the King’s assent follows formal passage in both houses.
Heavy snowfall gripped southern Alberta on Friday morning as municipalities struggled to clear highways and dig out from the deepest February snow since 1920. Kenyon Field recorded 5.7 inches in 24 hours, and five government plows began clearing major routes including Purcher Creek Bel lvue No 2, No 2 between Macleod and Nanton, and Cardaton area.
A heavy snowstorm closed Crows Nest Pass and delayed trains in and around Lethbridge. By Friday morning a government snowplow began clearing Cardston-Waterton and No 7 routes while traffic resumed west of Macleod. Temperatures plunged to 28 below zero with 40.4 inches of snow this winter in the region and the forecast calls for gradual warming and clear skies ahead.
New York February 18 A 28 year old artist testified that Metropolitan Opera tenor Fer T Tagliarini is the father of her infant daughter born October 5 1947 Courtroom cleared when counsel warned evidence might be scandalous The witness Miss Marty Phillips identified the singer as the father of her child Tagliarini aged 35 is married to Bioprano Pia Tassinari and was described as a regular court figure in the case
Severe weather shuts down Canadian Pacific and Canadian National lines near Grand Forks and Hope. Snow slides and floods trap trains and disrupt eastern telephone links to Kamloops Regina and Winnipeg. Power shortages persist as water reservoirs rise and utilities enforce tighter restrictions.
A Canadian Pacific Railway passenger train derailed near Old Bank head Alberta about 74 miles west of Calgary. Early reports say a number of passengers were injured. Doctors and nurses were dispatched and auxiliary equipment sent from Calgary as rescue teams moved to the scene.
