Tokyo reports a Japanese spokesman said aggressive steps by Britain and the United States in the Pacific caused anxiety and misgivings in Japan. The spokesman warned that mediation efforts were undermined by such moves as Japan seeks to bring peace and avoid broader conflict.
OFIA Bulgaria February 18 German diplomats report Greece could be pressed to peace with Italy on Mussolini terms after the Turkish Bulgarian non aggression pact. Hitler’s Balkan army might advance from Romania through Bulgaria into eastern Thrace if Greece balks, as Nazi propaganda claims a diplomatic victory while Greek circles say the pact affects none of their engagements. Turkey and Bulgaria call the treaty a sign of friendship and trust, noting small events can avert Balkan complications.
Reports from reliable quarters said Japanese naval forces in the Gulf of Siam had been increased heavily in the first 12 hours. A reliable foreign source reported last night 80,000 to 90,000 Japanese troops are stationed on the islands of Hainan and Formosa off the China coast.

Turkey joined Bulgaria in a nonaggression pact signaling a potential shift in British eastern Mediterranean stance. Uncertainty remains if Turkey would block German moves through Bulgaria against Greece or merely pressure Greece to peace with Italy.
Reports from Vreme cited a Bucharest dispatch claiming King Boris went to Germany yesterday to seek an outlet to the Aegean via Greece as Germany’s move into Bulgaria looms. A clash with Germany is anticipated, with Greeks likely to capitulate once it occurs.
