Orford Sunk While Serving as Troopship

New York Feb 12 Marine circles report the 20,043 ton British liner Orford has been sunk by enemy action while assigned as a troopship. Built 1928 at Barrow, she had run Britain to the Far East before the war. In 1936 Emperor Haile Selassie booked passage to reach England after Italy conquered Ethiopia. A Spanish coastal freighter San Carlos of 223 tons was said to be sunk recently by an Italian submarine near the Spanish coast.

British Forces Encircle Italian Garrison at Giarabub

British troops reportedly encircled the Italian garrison at Giarabub in the Libyan desert about 180 miles south of Tobruk. Other Nile forces were said to mop up scattered Italian bands south of Bengasi while Cheren in Eritrea near Asmara was besieged but considered too strong to fall immediately.

Two Nazi Prisoners of War Escape Prairie Camp

Calgary authorities and RCMP spread through the prairie internment camp area to recapture two German POWs, Ottomar Grunwald and Valdemar Bruggermann, who fled yesterday during an outside work detail. Military officials offered no new updates as the search continues, with four escapees now in penitentiary after prior attempts.

1000 German Planes Land In Bulgaria

A Reuters dispatch from Belgrade reports 1000 German airplanes had landed in Bulgaria by Monday and most Bulgarian airfields were under German control. The report says thousands of German troops have entered Bulgaria from Romania since February and that some tanks have been shipped up the Danube.

British Bombers Smash Nazi Territories In Daylong Raid

British bombers raided northwestern Germany and Nazi held Holland Denmark and Norway while fighter patrols swept over northern France. The RAF attacked Hanover and Bremen in nocturnal assaults as bomber crews suffered two fighters and one bomber missing. A returning aircraft crashed in Cambridge killing three crew. The Bremen raid sparked fires and explosions and an earlier Hanover engagement fed flames. Shipping was attacked in Kristiansand Norway and in Jutland Denmark with oil installations hit.

Joint War Funds Appeal Planned for March 24

Dr. E W Stapleford announced a combined appeal for funds will be launched on March 24 by five Canadian organizations aiding the armed forces. The Knights of Columbus, Salvation Army, YMCA, YWCA, and the Canadian Legion will join in the drive through voluntary services for national war efforts.

Recaptured German Prisoners in Calgary Region

Otto Grunewald and Waldermar Bruggermann, two German escapees from the prairie internment camp, were recaptured by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and military units in the Jumping Pound district southwest of Calgary shortly before 3 pm.
