(Oppesite Ellis^in Mills) Phone 364 Rome, via London, Feb. 12.-The Vatican has information from Austria that food riots have been repressed with bloodshed and that' frequently soldiers have refused to lire upon the citizens. Several regiments have mu-tineed and the situation is very serious. Sensational developments, including a revolution, are feared. The Vatican clergymen and cardi-1 nals have been asked to implore the jPope to stop the war in order to save Germany and Austria-Hungary. The Vatican organ, the Observatore Romano, points out in an inspired dv-ticle, that the clash between United States and Germany would establish a precedent for the right of the United States to influence European policies. It says that aftei; the war Europe would be weakened and United States could assume a preponderating position. With tie objject of averting such eventuality, the paper says, the I'ope is striving to avert war between' the United States and. Germany and expects to succeed.
