Twenty four people died when an American Airlines transcontinental plane crashed into the Mississippi River near Memphis. Army engineers began lifting wreckage and recovered a wing, fuselage parts, a luggage door, seat cushions, and a mail bag while searching for bodies. The ship exploded on impact. witnesses described a small, low approach and a rapid sink.

Finnish town Kotka hit again in aerial bombing
A German broadcast said Kotka, 70 miles east of Helsinki on the Gulf of Finland, was bombed for two hours by an estimated 150 aircraft.
